Facta are more weighty than theo-
ries. When we see that the groat
nations of tlie world, those that lead
its thought and embrace its civiliza-
tion, arc Christian, the inind takes
bold of the great moral fact, and is
not to bo shaken from its convic-
tion*, however specious the argu-
ment of the unbeliever. So too
when we ace the great nations of the
world, those which dominate the
world's commerce, lead in the arts
and sciences, and within whose lim-
its are the citadels of civilization, re-
ligion ami Christianity with absolute
unanimity, follow a particular course
of policy, and the semi-barbarous,
bankrupt ami unenlightened nations
til the earth, the opposite of that
course, we know that civilization i
right, and thai barbarism is wrong.
I'liis view should not be lost, on those
who would have our government
inaugurate a financial policy at va-
riance with that of ail the great com-
mercial nations of the earth. The

our gold abandon us and leave tis on
a silver basis? Let us call the roll
of tlte nations and take tlicir testi-
mony. As an example of free coin-
age conies lir>t our neighbor Mexico.
The ratio there between gold and
silver is much more liberal than that
demanded by our free coinage
friends. Yet Mexico is on a silver
basis and lias been for years. Its
trial conditions forbid compari-
son with our own or other countries
where sound financial policies have
hitherto prevailed. Certain coun-
tries of South America might b ■
summoned us witnesses by our free
coinage friends, but. their experience
lias been like that of Mexico, and
tlie three greatest of them all, Brazil,
Chile and Venezuela, have adopted
the gold standard. China is another
silver country. Japan has been
hitherto, but is even now agitating
the question of abandoning the pol-
