Notwithstanding the impression
which has gune oat that the project
for building the Taylor, Elgiu aud
liastrop road has (alien through, we
are glad to lie able to state, emphati-
cally, that such is not the case. It
is true, its early construction cannot
be expected, ltut that it will he
built aud running to Bastrop in less
than two years, we have not a parti-
cle of doubt. The failure to securc
the assistance, at this time, of the
Missouri Pacific^ is not at all surpris-
ing, when we consider the depressing
tiuauces, the late heavy rains and
consequent damages, coupled with
the effect of the strikes on nearly all
the railway lines, rendering it impos-
sible to raise money in New York or
anywhere else In this project, those
"who have taken hold of the plow,"
have done so with u determination
"not to look buck," and will exhaust
every means to get the road construc-
ted. The people of Ibistrop, El-
gin aud Taylor are in downright car-
lies* about hiiiidiug this roml. Why
not form ii coin puny and secure the
stock among ourselves? We believe
suflicient stock could be subveribed
by the three towns to build the load,
if nil would only unite in n "strong
pull and a long pull," avoiding sus-
picions, and with none to hold back,
the project could easily be carried to
success. With $80,000 or $25,000
of stock at Taylor, $10,000 or $15,tKH)
at Elgin, and *75,000 to *100,000 at
Hastrop, the road could be built aud
equipped. It subscription lists wore
opeued at all the points aud the mat-
ter properly worked up, we could
soon have suflicient subscrilied to se-
cure a charter, elect a I ward of direc-
tors aud olticcrs of the road, and con-
tract for its construction. The
amounts subscribed could be paid in
as the road progresses. There is no
question hut that with a good sul>-
script inn list and the bonus already
subsciibed, it will not be difficult to
secure a responsible contractor to un-
dertake the construction of the road.
The stock taken would be paying
stock, and iu a very short time those
taking the stock could get their mo-
money back if they wished. And,
the investment being a safe one, why
cannot we find monied men iu our
own localities to furnish us with a
sufficient amount to build aud equip
the road? The projectors of this
movement are active, wide-awake
business men, and have determined
not to let it tall through. It is now
the duty of every citizen to cast aside

The quiet of the early inoruiag
Sunday was disturbed by one of the
most horrible accidents that has ever
occurred in this city. It was a little
alter 7:80 o'clock, an hour in this
city wheu the average Sabbath morn-

ion of oue of the tilty-horsc power

the inhabitants of nearly the eutiro

those living in the immediate neigh-

The shock was so sudden and terri-

those within its immediate influence.
As portions of the brick wall, mi-
mouse pieces of timber, articles of
furniture, betiding, etc, and even
human bodies, were shot into the air,
those who beheld the appalling siul.t
were spellboiiu'l, and ideas ol earth-
quakes, tornadoes and other like dis-

suggested themselves, until a tli ii-e
