the teachers. The facilitator plans with
them and asks for input on the unique needs
of the Title I students. The facilitator writes
lesson plans according to the needs of the
students. Lesson plans and materials are
provided for five educational assistants who
work directly with the students in small
groups. The students are gaining knowl-
edge and confidence from these sessions.
We are hoping that our extra effort will be
seen in future test scores. Santa Fe Kin-
dergarten Bilingual program incorporates
a program called Skill Streaming in Early
Childhood (SSEC). This program teaches
pro/social skills to pre school and kinder-
garten children.
Preschool and kindergarten years are a spe-
cial time for the young child. Social, lan-
guage, and cognitive learning are rapidly
taking place and, at the same time, most
children begin to experience anger, frus-
tration, and fear as they comingle with
larger groups. The principal announces a
new social skill over the intercom each
Monday. Everyone works on that skill dur-
ing the week. The program is designed to
provide focus by having everyone work on
a common skill during the week.
Both PPCD classrooms have faced many
challenges and joys in meeting the needs
of these early childhood children. We have
both a highly supportive principal and well
respected Special Education Director, an
experienced and knowledgeable (L.I.T.E)
Learning in Their Environment facilitator,
who is our liaison between special educa-
tion and regular education, and the dedica-
tion, humor, patience, and cooperation of
the PPCD teachers and educational assis-
tants have made this program a huge success. We have both a highly supportive
