New residence hall dedicated and blessed
Stephanie Stoeckl
Contributing Writer
After long months of
construction, the new
residence hail was dedicated
and blessed in a ceremony at 9:30
a.m., Jan. 19. A continental breakfast
preceded the dedication in the first
floor lounge of the new building
and was attended by students,
faculty, alumni, board members,
trustees and others, as well as long
time supporters of the University,
such as Mrs. Ed Haggar and her
daughter, Patty Jo Turner, whose
family foundation supports various
philanthropic causes. Trustees present
included Turner, Gene Vilfordi and
Frank Hubach. The National Alumni
Board, which has made a gift to the
new hall, was represented by Curtis
Downs, Jessica Mandala and Mary
Ritter. The class of 1988, which made
a significant contribution in memory
of two of their classmates, Robin Cala
and Eric Hamm, was represented by
Anne Hoelscher.
In his welcome address, Interim
President Bob Galecke expressed
his hope that the new residence hall
would improve the quality of student
life and encouraged students to
develop stronger bonds of community
between classes.
"We felt there was a disconnect,"
Galecke said. "Freshmen and
sophomores don't see juniors and
seniors on campus,"
Galecke also hoped that the new
hall would makethe University more
attractive to prospective students as
well as help new and continuing
student retention rates. Looking
toward the future, he said that this
was only page one, and that, over
time, the University hopes to create
another building like this one.
Following Galecke's welcome,
the building was blessed by University
Chaplain Fr. Rudy Garcia, who was
assisted by Fr. Joseph Van House, O.
Cist., both alumni of the University.
"The word 'blessing' comes from
the Latin 'benedicere,' to speak well,"
Garcia said. "When we collaborate
with building God's kingdom, he
wants to speak well of us. if the Lord
does notbuiid the house, in vain does
he labor who built it. We begin all our
activities and enterprises by asking
his blessing."
After the blessing, the red and blue
ribbon was cut by Pat Daly, associate
vice president for admi nistration, and
Student Government President Justin
Dugyon.
As to the name of the new
building, which has not yet been
determined, Phil Trammel, director
of development, said, "we have a
continuing discussion with a family

Wood explained that the Aquinas
