Big State Drugs a step back in time

Visiting Big State Drugs in the Irving
Heritage District is like taking a step back
in time. One would almost expect to see
Sheriff Andy Taylor at the counter with
his son Opie.
Big State Drugs has been around 54
years, and it is one of only two drugstores
in the Dallas Metroplex to have an old-
fashioned soda fountain, grill, and lunch
counter.
The malts and shakes are very good;
both are made exclusively with Blue Bell
ice cream.
The food was also delicious. The on-
ion rings were, as the menu promised, fat
and juicy, and they weren't the least bit
greasy.
The waitress was friendly, though she
refused to be in any of the photos.
"I was already in the Star-Telegram,"
she said.
Although the lunch counter is the main
attraction, Big State also has a pharmacy,
standard drugstore fare such as tooth-
brushes and aspirin, and a ridiculously
wide array of Beanie Babies.
Big State Drugs is open Monday
through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and
Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The drug-
store is closed on Sunday.
