Pioneer Plaza rounds up downtown
Life-like art rendering of steer, old western cowboys
by Thomas Watson
Co-Editor in Chief
Surrounded by the Reunion Ball, the
Dallas Convention Center, and the strang-
est-looking courthouse in America, Pioneer
Plaza is atranquil area that seems quite dif-
ferent from its surroundings.
The plaza looks like a scene out of a John
Wayne movie, with statues of cowboys
leading a massive herd of longhorns
through rocky terrain to a creek.
According to the website of the Dallas
Trees and Parks Foundation, the scene
shows a trail boss watching pensively as
his cowboys drive the longhorns down the
Shawnee Trail.
The statues are nothing short of amaz-
ing. They are larger-than-life-approxi-
mately 140 percent of actual size.
The longhorns stop at a creek to drink,
and stepping stones allow the viewer to
walk across to the other side. The water-
fall that awaits at the edge of the cliff is
also a fantastic spectacle.
The park is open to all hours of the night,
but it is most spectacular in the davtime. It
would be an excellent spot for a picnic, but
it is a fun place to go if only to marvel at
the work of art. A cemetary behind the stat-
ues houses the remains of many of the
founding fathers of Dallas.
The most recent addition to Pioneer
Plaza is a number of granite panels that
detail the cattle brands used by many of
the most famous Texas ranches.

The sculptures in downtown Dallas of a herd of cattle and the cowboys that drive them are a
modem addition to the city. The man-made stream and waterfall that are part of the work
recall the varied terrain of the period. (abovej The steer are guided in a mostly orderly
fashion by the cowboys to the water en route to their destination, (bottom left) The cowboy
looks pensively out over the herd from the high peak above the valley, (bottom right) A steer
emerges from the running water, a central focus of the sculpture, with life -like beauty.
