Ity the pastor. Rev. Perry J. Rice was
upon tho subject "False and True
Professions of Faith." Jt was a study
of the multitude that escorted Jesus
into Jerusalem on the occasion of his
triumphal entrance Into that city.
Mr. Rice described the crowd
on thoroughly cosmopolitan and
therefore typical of such crowds. He
suld:
"It was made up In part by the dls
ciples who had been with Jesus dur
InK all of his earthly ministry who
knew him' and yet could not under
stand him. This little group of de
voted followers was augmented by
another group or citizens of Bethany
where Jesus had spent the night and
where he was well known. But the

majority were the Jew and prose-
lytes from the c It lea of the dlspenston.
They were from near and 'from far;
there were Pharisees! In the' company
and doubtless reprnaentatlveo of other
religious parties. It was a thorough!
typical crowd such a crowd as Presi-
dent Wilson deeotibed as 'a Jolly lot
a Job lot of human beings pulsating
with life with all kinds of passions
and desires.'
"What thin crowd did was the really
conventional thing. They indulged in
a great spectacular demonstration of
enthusiastic admiration for a popular
hero. The disciple started it. They
had a conviction that Jesus was about
to assert his kingship and claim his
throne. HI own act In calling; for an
ass to ride upon lent enthusiasm to
that oonvfctton and they could hot
restrain their pent up emotions and
so began to shout: 'Hosanna to the
son of David.' The crowd eagerly
(-caught up the acclaim and gave It
added volume. They cast their gar-
ments In the way and cast down palm
branches before him. It was spec
tacular but not at all unique. The
scene has been repeated many times
In history. Only the other day the
people strew roses before General Villa
as he rode Into Tprreon after eleven
days of fierce fighting.
"But such professions of loyalty and
faith do not i mean much. They are
largely expressions of the Impersonal
crowd. We all do and say things un
der the urgency of the crowd that we
would not Jhink of doing when alone
Much that they shouted was true
Jesus was the son of David but not In
the sense In which they understood it
lie was a king but not In the role of
temporal ruler. Their faith there
fore while It was orthodox was false
It was based upon Interpretations that
were untrue. Our exact definitions of
Jesus are as likely ot be exclusive aa
Inclusive. They leave out aa much as
they take In.
Our professions of faith that follow
the acclaim of the multitude are of
little worth. They do not endure the
strain of days that follow. This same
crowd that shouted the praises of
Jesus on Sunday cried out for his
blood on Friday.
True faith is personal rather than
collective; It Is vital rather than for
mal. Vital religion has seldom been
bound up very closely with orthodoxy
though It may be. Too many of us
are willing to take the faith expressed
in creeds as our faith. We spend all
our energies trying to believe as other
folks believe and have no rich Joy in
personal connection growing out of
fresh discovery. It looks fine for
some one to fix up for us a nice little
summary of Christian truth and pre
sent It to us for our assent but that
assent does not make It vital to our
lives and therefore it cannot stand
the tests that are sure to follow.
At the close of the service Mr. Rice
announced his decision In regard to
the Invitation recently extended to
him from the First Christian church
at Springfield 111. He said that ht
had yielded to the Invitation enough
to visit the place because of certain
personal considerations and not be-
cause of any dissatisfaction regarding
the work here. Aftr Investigation
he declared it his decision not to leave
his present work. He said he felt
deeply Interested In this city and the
surrounding country from the stand
point not alone of Its wonderul ma
terial prosperity but from the stand
point as well of Its opportunities for
religious development and he wanted
to have a part In It.

Rev. Kenneth Brown pastor of the

came to El Paso In April. 190H.
In Humming up the work or the six
years Of his ministry here yeHtertlay

the church which began with nothing
now possesses Its own property
worth about $8000 furnished and
equipped with gymnasium moving

which appeal to the social llf as we)

his experience of 1 8 years In 10 dlf

After tnis nricr summary or nis

tention to the faults and Ideals of the
El Paso people which have had - a
good deal to do with making this the
pleasant field of labor it has been to
him and at the same time the most
difficult he has ever had.
Be referred to the enterprising
spirit of Kl Pasoana which he
thought. Is scarcely surpassed in any
part of the country and mentioned
In evidence the city pavements the

shown In the fight for the Elephant

mentioned the optimism of El Paaoans
which Is so characteristic of our peo-
ple as well as their affability and
charitableness to strangers.
Over against these good features he
