SCAN laments
staggering
smoking totals
Rio Grande City-
Unfortunately, many people
who smoke cannot quit. It is
a serious disease that has
alarming statistics.
In Texas, 24.3 percent of
high school students smoke,
and 55,400 kids become
daily smokers every year.
Every year, tobacco use kills
24,200 residents and costs
the state S5.4 billion in
health care bills. Nationally,
about 22 percent of high
school students smoke.
Tobacco use kills more than
400,000 people in the U.S
and costs the nation more
than $89 billion in health
care bills each year.
Please, if you don't smoke,
don't start and if you smoke,
quit now to reduce your
chances of becoming one of
these statistics. (This
message provided by Starr
County Community
Coalition of SCAN, Inc.).
If a mother respects both her-
self and her child from his very
first day onward, she will never
need to teach him respect for
others.

Preceptor Laureate Ritual
honors Rosario Pope
A Preceptor Laureate ritual
was held for Rosario Pope at
the November 2 meeting of
Texas Delta Theta Master of
Beta Sigma Phi held in her
home, which was beautifully
decorated for the autumn
season. Josie Guerra was
first officiant; Rosie Garcia
was second officiant, and
third officiant was Tissa
Peterson. Mrs. Pope was
crowned with the laurel
wreath by sisters Irma Pena
and AI m a Gloria T.
Gonzalez. Also
participating were Vangie
Anderson. Nelda Laurel, a
President Sonja Smith, who
presided during the business
session.
The service committee
reported that a check for
student uniforms was
presented by Irma Pena and
Rosie Garcia to Adeline
Cantu. principal of Alto
Bonito Elementary School.
The sorority will also make a
donation to Celia and Roel
Saenz Elementary in Roma
for school uniforms for
needy students.
Following the International
theme, Share our Passport to
Adventure, members of
Texas Delta Theta Master of
Beta Sigma Phi enjoyed a
program on Hainan, China at
their second meeting in
October. President Sonja
Smith presided during the
meeting, held at Denny's
with Nelda Laurel serving as
hostess.
Prouram Chairman Tissa
Peterson presented a
Powerpoint slide show about
Hainan, the smallest land
province in China. Located
off the southern coast of
China, this island province
occupies an area of 13,510
square miles, compared to
Hawaii, which has 10,932
square miles. it is the
second largest ocean island
(Taiwan is largest). Made
up of some two hundred
islands scattered among
three archipelagos, 97%
percent of its land mass is on
Hainan Island.
Hainan is called "the
Oriental Hawaii," and with
good cause. It is at the same
latitude as our island state.
It is an ideal place to visit in
the winter, between
November and March. The
rainy season is from May to
October. It's far away from
crowded cities, a good
choice for relaxation and
swimming, famous for its
tropical beach landscapes
and coconut plantations.
Benefitting from the modern
trend toward ecotourism, the
island boasts excellent air
quality, clean water and a
healthy lifestyle.
There are 8 major cities
and 10 counties on Hainan,
which is largely untouched
by industrialization; there
are relatively few factories
in the province. Tourism
plays an important part of
Hainan's economy. Hainan's
economy is also highly
agricultural, and more than a
half of the island's exports
are agricultural products,
including rice, coconuts,
palm oil, tropical fruits
(including pineapples, of
which Hainan is China's
leading producer), black
pepper, coffee, tea, cashews,
and sugarcane.
Besides the beautiful
beaches, attractions include
Yalong Bay Sea Shell
Museum, the Butterfly Park,
hot springs, and wildlife
preserves with exotic
animals and birds.
Neighboring countries to
visit are the Philippines
towards the east, Malaysia
and Brunei towards the
south, Indonesia (Natuna
Islands) towards the
southwest, and Vietnam
towards the west.
