Dec. 12 event to celebrate
473 anniversary of apparition
Immaculate Conception Church,
San Pablo Church and Sacred Heart
Church are uniting for a very
special event on Dec. 12, 2004.
Members of the parishes are
planning to celebrate the 473rd
jumiyersary of the apparition of the
Virgin of Guadalupe to St. Juan
Diego at Tepeyac in December
1531.
Since this date, the Virgin has
played an important role in the
development of Mexico's national
identity. In 1737, she was declared
the Patroness of Mexico City. Later
in 1895, she was declared Queen of
Mexico; in 1910 she became
Patroness of Latin America and in
1945 she became the Empress of
the Americas. In 1810, Father
Hidalgo used her image to
symbolize the movement of
liberation by Mexico from Spain.
Since the very beginning, many
people have become devoted to her.
Their prayers and pilgrimages are
evidenced in the more than 10
million visitors to the Basilica in
Mexico City yearly. The number of

her followers far outnumber the
visitors. Followers of the Virgin of
Guadalupe make pilgrimages, offer
prayers and (lowers for devotions
and/or intercessions. As the
Hispanic population has migrated
to other countries, so has their
patrons.
For many years, members of
Sacred Heart and Immaculate
Conception have walked from Los
Garcias to Immaculate Conception
Church. As they walk, songs and
prayers can be heard and banners and
Hags are waved. When the
pelegrinos reached ICC, mass was
celebrated.
This year, the church members
are planning a Dia de la Virgen de
Guadalupe that all will remember.
Since this special day falls on a
Sunday, all community members
are invited to participate. It is
planned that peregrinos will walk
from La Puerta and Los Garcias to
Rattler Stadium for the the
celebration of mass at 10:30 a.m.
Community members unable to
walk can wait at the stadium for the
I c.t-grinos to arrive.
As part of the pilgrimage,
matachines (students dressed as
native dancers) will (he
pilgrimage. The committee ' ,lus
celebration is still working on
plans for a day to remember - til
Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe on
