Alvarez, Michalak plan Sept. 27 wedding
Raul Ruben Alvarez, originally from Rio Grande City, and Theresa Ann
Michalak, originally from La Porte, Texas, will exchange marriage vows
on Sept. 27. 2003. The bridegroom-elect is presently a member of the
Austin City Council. The prospective bride is currently the Community
Development Officer for Wells Fargo Bank. Both the prospective bride
and prospective groom currently reside in Austin.

Ms. Michalak is the
granddaughter of Sireta and Frank
Michalak, Jr. of Praha, Texas and
Isabel and Margarito Fernandez of
Pearland. Texas Mr. Alvarez is the
son of Yolanda and Sabino Alvar" •

The prospective bride is a 1993
Cum I.aude graduate of La Porte
High School and a 1997 graduate ol
the University of Texas at Austin,
where she received a Bachelor of
Business Administration majoring
in Finance and studying abroad in
Monterrey. Mexico. Ms. Michalak
is currently employed as the
Community Development Officer
for Wells l argo Bank.
She is a former dancer of the
Aztlan Dance Company and
currently serves as the treasurer and
past president of Believe in Me. and
as a board member for Inroads. Ms.
Michalak is a member of the
University of Texas Hispanic
Advisory Council, Austin CDC's
Community Council and the
Hispanic Chamber's Economic
Development Committee.
The prospective groom is the
1985 salutatorian graduate of Rio
Grande City High School, and a
1990 graduate of Stanford
University where he received a B S.
in Industrial Engineering. He is
also a 1995 graduate of the
University of Texas at Austin,
where he received an M.S. in
Community and Regional
Planning.
Mr. Alvarez has served on the
Austin City Council since June
2000 He currently serves on the
City of Austin's Health Care,
Telecommunications and Small
Business Development committees
Prior to sers ing in public office, he
was the Environmental Justicc
Director for the Lone Star Chapter
of the Sierra Club
The wedding ssill take place at 4
p.m. on Sept. 27, 2003 at Cristo
Rey Catholic Church. The bride's
cousin, Archbishop Patrick Flores
of San Antonio, will perform the
ceremony along with their parish
pastor. Father Larry Mattingly. The

World Theatre.

as naval officer
Navy Ensign Rodolfo Benitez,
son of Angelica and Andres Benite/
of Rio Grande City recently
received his commission as a naval
officer alter completing Officci
Candidate School (OCS) at Naval
Av iation Schools Command. Naval
Air Station, Pensacola, Florida
During the I 3-week-long training
program. Benitez received extensive
instruction on a variety ol
specialized subjects including
navigation. ship handling,
engineering, naval warfare and
management Benitez also
completed a demanding daily
