Ines Carrera, at right, was installed as president, and Lydia G. Saenz was
installed as secretary of the Rio Grande Valley Federation of Women's Clubs
at the 124"' Convention of the organization. Also installed were Norma
Cole, vice-president, and Emma Ross, treasurer. Mrs. Carrera is a member
ot'the Woman's Club ofRjo Grande City, and Mrs. Saenz is a member of the
Florence J. Scott Study Club. The officers were installed by JoAnna Veriietti

The Cantare' Community Youth
Choir is scheduled to resume choir
practices and activities on July 9.
The group was dismissed for a
summer break after their last
performance in May.
Participation in the choir is
opened to boys and girls between
the ages of seven and 18 who have
a genuine interest in music and are
willing to dedicate time and effort
toward the undertakings of the
group.
The choir, under the direction of
Mrs. Reyna, explores, practices and
performs a wide variety of music
styles.
Performances and activities have
already been scheduled for the
summer and fall months.
Interested parties are encouraged
to call Mrs. Reyna at 487-3443.

The speaker encouraged
everyone to grow native plants and
provide water so that butterflies,
birds, hummingbirds, and other

proliferate. She praised the
Raymondville club for the butterfly
garden they started at the public
library.
Mrs. Troppy made a donation to
the scholarship fund of the Valley
Federation as her president's gift
and encouraged everyone to support

Ball, reporting for the scholarship
committee, read a thank you note
from Lucy J. Gonzalez, a student at
UTPA, who is the current recipient of
the scholarship, $500 each semester.
It was also reported that the Country
Store held throughout the convention,
had raised over $ 115 for the
scholarship fund. All items at the
store had been donated by attendees.
A special presentation was made
to Scholarship Star Award Winner
Marjorie Medland, who was in
attendance with her daughter,
granddaughter, and great-
granddaughter.
Other awards presented were for
yearbooks, written reports, and oral
reports. The Florence J. Scott Study
Club won first place with its yearbook
and first place with the President's
Written Report, both of which were
termed "outstanding," and second
place with the President's Oral
Report.
Following the convention, the Rio
Grande City delegation visited the
Raymondville Flistorical Museum,
located in the heart of the San Juan

national, state, and corporate schol-
arships. The students were honored
during a scholarship ceremony held
on May 22, 2002 in the Auditorium.

was made to Jose Narciso Cavazos in
1790 by the King of Spain and
consisted of600,000 acres, for which
Cavazos paid $53.60.
The museum houses artifacts and
memorabilia from the Nueces Strip,
that strip of land between the Nueces
and the Rio Grande Rivers that was
the immediate cause of the Mexican
War. Valley life and nature from
Laredo to Brownsville are also
featured.

which barricades were made dur-
ing a Paris insurrection in 1588.
