Fall 2007 begins with continued heat
The fall season began this past weekend, but this Texas State Bank temperature reading in Rio Grande
City showed continued heat on Monday, Sept. 24. Temperatures soared into the 90's on Friday,
Saturday and Sunday, and again on Monday. A cool front has not yet arrived to even slightly moderate
the heat. The past week has also been marked by an absence of the rainy conditions that dominated
from mid-June into early September.
Rio Hondo Bobcats
overwhelm Gladiators 48-0
ROMA - The Rio Hondo
Bobcats attacked early and did
not relent in the onslaught in
handing the Roma Gladiators
their fourth straight loss of the
season. The Bobcats looked in
mid-season form as they rode a
first half surge scoring often and
leading 41 -0 at the intermission.
Rio Hondo's Shane Eizember
scored three touchdowns, two
TD catches (17,5) from
quarterback Joseph Vela in the
first half and added a 35-yard
interception return for a score in
the third quarter.
The Gladiators (0-4) open up
District 32-4A play Friday
evening Sept. 28th, in Mercedes
against the Tigers (2-2) a 40-27
loser to Weslaco High this past
Friday evening. The Gladiator
defense will have to do a much
better job of containing the
Mercedes offensive attack that
racked up the yardage in a
losing effort for a total of 35 1
yards.
The homeland of the first immigrant processed at Ellis Island was

increase the total tax revenues of the
City of Rio Grande City
from properties on the tax roll in the preceding
year by 1 1.07 percent
on September 20, 2007 at 6:00 PM and September 25,
2007 at 6:00 PM.

Rattlers explode offensively
to thrash Hanna Eagles 49-35
An explosive running attack
that unleashed many big plays
enabled the Rio Grande City
Rattlers to thrash the
Brownsville Hanna Eagles 49-
35 in a non-district battle at Joe
R. Sanchez Stadium Friday
evening.
The Rattlers exploded for 21
points in the first quarter and
owned a 21-7 lead by the end of
the opening period. They
increased their advantage to 35-
7 by halftime with two second
quarter scores. The Rattlers and
Eagles each scored one
touchdown in the third period,
enabling the Rattlers to take a
42-14 lead into the final quarter.
In a furious comeback effort,
the Eagles scored two
touchdowns to cut the margin to
42-28 with just over five
minutes remaining. The Rattlers
responded by scoring an
insurance touchdown with just
under a minute remaining. The
Eagles scored their final
touchdown with one second left.
The Rattlers shredded the
Eagle defense for 504 yards
rushing on only 44 plays. The
Rattlers achieved four scoring
runs of 39 yards or greater, with
Justin Ortega scampering for an
80-yard score and Armando
Garza breaking touchdown runs
of 76. 51 and 39 yards. In a
memorable performance, Garza
collected 250 yards rushing on
only 14 carries. Ortega had a big
night with 133 yards.
The Eagles collected 276
yards of total offense, with four
of their touchdowns coming
through the air.
The Rattlers drew first blood
when B.J. Garza scored on a
seven-yard run with 8:41 left in
the first quarter. Emmanuel
Reyna booted the extra point to
give the Rattlers an early 7-0
advantage.
The Rattlers reached the
Hanna end zone again less than
two minutes later when
Armando Garza bolted 39 yards
for a touchdown with 6:49 left
in the opening stanza. Reyna
kicked the extra point to extend
Rio's edge to 14-0.
The Eagles dented the Rattler
defense for a 35-yard
touchdown pass from
quarterback Noe Santibanez to
Mike Perez with 2:46 left in the
opening period. Luis Garcia
booted the extra point to cut the
deficit to 14-7.
The Rattlers scored again as
time ran out in the first period
on an eight-yard scamper by
Justin Ortega. Reyna's extra
point kick boosted the Rattlers'
margin to 21-7.
Ortega exploded through the
Eagles' defense for an 80-yard
scoring romp with 7:32
remaining until halftime.
Reyna's extra point kick sailed
between the uprights to increase
the margin to 28-7.
With 1:23 left until
intermission, Armando Garza
motored 76 yards for a Rattler
touchdown. Reyna'f> extra point
kick made the score 35-7, and
that's how the score stood as the
two teams went into their
lockerrooms at halftime.
The Rattlers stunned the
Eagles again when Armando
Garza bolted 51 yards for a
touchdown with 10:26 left in the
third stanza. Reyna boomed the
extra point to increase the

The Eagles began their uphill
journey when Noe Santibanez
threw an 18-yard touchdown
pass to Jason Mendoza with
2:49 remaining in the third
period. Luis Garcia's extra point
kick trimmed Rio's margin to
42-14.
The Eagles began a furious
fourth quarter rally on a one-
yard scoring run by Jason
Mendoza with 9:40 left in the
game. Luis Garcia's extra point
kick was true to narrow the
deficit to 42-21.
Hanna cut deeper into the .
Rattler advantage when Xavier
Villarreal caught a four-yard
scoring pass from Santibanez
with 5:07 remaining. Garcia
boomed the extra point to pull
the Eagles to within 42-28.
The Rattlers put the game 0
completely out of reach when
Ernest Garza scampered 13
yards for a touchdown with 58
seconds left in the contest.
Reyna kicked his seventh extra
point in seven attempts to boost
the Rattlers' advantage to 49-28
The Eagles drove deep into
Rattler territory and scored with
one second remaining when
Santibanez threw a one-yard
scoring pass to Xavier
Villarreal. Garcia's extra point
kick made the final score 49-35.
The Rattlers harvested 12 first
downs, 508 total yards, 504
yards rushing and 4 yards ,
passing. They scored on four t
runs of 39 yards or longer.
Armando Garza achieved one
of the greatest rushing
performances in Rattler history
with 250 yards on 14 carries and
three touchdowns on scampers ^
