ICS holds groundbreaking
for four new classrooms
On Saturday, May 26,
groundbreaking ceremonies were
held for an additional four
classrooms at Immaculate
Conception School. Pastor Father
Amador Garza gave the blessing
and led the dedication, following a
welcome and introduction by
Principal Angelina Karpinski.
Mann ing the shovels were Father
Amador, Mrs. Karpinski, Assistant
Superintendent of the Diocese of
Brownsville Sister Charles Ann
Solomon, I.C.S. School Council
President Rene Montalvo, Sharon
Newell Murloz, and Contractor Jose
Alaffa. Others in attendance
gathered around as the soil was
turned to mark the event.
Father Amado^ recognized the
school's generous benefactors of the
project, the Kennedy Foundation,
the Coates Foundation, the
Congregation of St. Joseph of
Carondelet, and Mr. and Mrs.
Alberto Muftoz II (in memory of
Clyde Newell).
He also thanked all the Catholic
sisters who were in attendance and
spoke in honor of all those who have
served the Diocese of Brownsville
and Immaculate Conception School
in the past for carrying on the
tradition of Catholic education and
honoring God through religious
instruction.
A reception was held in the
Parish Hall following the
groundbreaking ceremony. ITiose
attending included Sister Helen^
Rottier and Sister Mary Ann Potts,
representing their community, the
Congregation of St. Joseph of
Carondelet, and Lydia Hinojosa,
Socorro N. Treviflo, and Sharon

Diocesan School Council member
Fred Margo, I.C.S. School Council
members, and faculty, staff,
students, and friends of Immaculate
Conception School.

Delay games when
thunderstorms approach
Countless lightning tragedies
have occurred on sport fields in
Texas through the years. People on
open sport fields are at higher risk
for lightning strikes.
Sports fields are dangerous
because they arc large open areas
where people are often the tallest
objects. Sports fields also have
metal bleachers, fcnces, light poles
and goal posts that attract
lightning. When lightning hits
these objects, its charge travels
along the object shocking anyone
who is touching it. Lightning can
also bouncc off any of these objects
and strike people nearby.
"Schools, athletic programs, day
care centers and summer camps, as
well as coaches, referees and parents
participating in field events need to
understand the danger of lighining
and be prepared to take immediate
action. Activity policies should
clearly state that if thunder is heard,
games and activities should be
suspended until the threat passes
and thunder is no longer heard,"
says Division of Emergency
Management Coordinator Tom
Millwee.
I
include two classrooms for the
Montessori Program for three and
four year olds, a music room lo be
dedicated in the memot,. of
•Elizabeth Coates. whose foundation
has generously awarded music
grants to I.C.S , and a science lab to
be named in memory of Clyde
Newell.
"No sporting event is worth
risking the lives of the people and
children on or around fields." Says
Millwee, "When a game or practice
is delayed due to a thunderstorm,
move everyone indoors or into cars
or buses until the storm passes."
The Division of Emergency
Management offers the following
lighining safety tips:
* Stay tuned to local weather
forecasts.
* If you can hear thunder, you are
close enough to the storm to be
struck by lightning.
* Find a low spot away from
trees, bleachers, goal posts and
other structures.
* Make sure the area is not prone
to flooding.
The dogfish is actually a small
