Kenny Anderson named '98

The Starr County Youth Fair
Board of Directors is proud to
announce the unanimous selection
of Kenny Anderson as Parade
Marshall for the annual parade
because of his dedication to the fair.
Kenny will be featured at the
beginning of the thirty-third Starr
County Fair parade this Friday,
February 27, at 10:00 a.m.
Kenny has been an active
volunteer with the Starr County
Fair for many years and has served
as an Advisory Director for the past
ten years. He is currently serving
as chairman of the market hog
division.
The awesome task of ordering
all the awards, ribbons, rosettes,
and trophies, for all the divisions is
a responsibility he also handles
well, along with distributing them
and assisting with the Parade of
Champions.
The 1998 Parade Marshall also
plays a big part in making the
annual fundraiser, the Wild Game
Dinner, a success, from the
planning stages to pitching in and
cooking. He is always around
when it's time to prepare the
grounds for the fair, decorate the
Starr County Fair queen's float, and
to assisting in a variety of ways
every day during the fair. He and
He is a past president of the
Southwest Football Officials
Association, Rio Grande Valley
Chapter, of which he has been a
member for twenty-eight years.
He is the Umpire Consultant
for District 24 Little League
Baseball, and he has been selected
to officiate this year at the state
tournament in Waco and the
regional tournament in Florida.
The Andersons are active
members of St. John United
Methodist Church, where Kenny
serves as a trustee. He has also
been instrumental in making their
annual fundraiser barbecues a big
success.
Kenny is a graduate of Sam
Houston State University. He and
Vangie, both graduates of Rio
Grande City High School, have
three children, all graduates of Rio
Grande City High School. Rodney
is a graduate of Sam Houston State
University and serves the U. S.
Border Patrol in Arizona. Douglas,
who received his degree at Uvalde,
lives and manages a dry cleaning
business in Lubbock. Tracy is a
freshman at the University of Texas
at Austin.

Kenny, a farm manager at Starr
Produce Company, is no stranger to
community service. As the son of
Dorothy P. Anderson and the late
Frank Anderson, he grew up in a
family very active in the
community. He has been an active
member of the Rio Grande City
Beef Syndicate lor fifteen years,
cooking, slicing, and serving a
huge amount of beef for their many
barbecues to benefit the participants
in the fair.

RGC Woman's Club holds February meeting
The Woman's Club of Rio
Grande City met Feb. 5 at the
home of Mrs. Rosario Pope with
Mrs. Queia Pope as hostess.
Mrs. Nelda Laurel, president,
opened the meeting and Mrs. Evita
Ramirez led the group in a prayer
for Mrs. Elma Garza, who is in the
hospital, and her sisters. She then
welcomed Mrs. Rosario Pope as a
new member and thanked for having
the meeting. Reports of officers and
standing committees were given.
Mrs. Vale reported she will be
hostess for the next meeting on
March 5 at 6 p.m. for dinner at
LaBorde House. The meeting will
honor the South Texas District
President. She also presented a club
yearbook which received honorable
mention.
Mrs. Anderson presented the new
slate of officers for 1998-2000 who
were unanimously elected. They are
listed as follows: President- Mrs.
Judy Parks; First Vice President-
Mrs. Alma Gloria Gonzalez;
Second Vice President- Mrs. Elma
Garza; Recording Secretary- Mrs.
Inez Carrera; Corresponding
Secretary- Mrs. Elia Perez;
Treasurer- Mrs. Eva Ramirez;
Parliamentarian- Mrs. Nelda Laurel;
Federation Counselor- Mrs. Inez
Carrera.
Mrs. Alma Gloria Gonzalez
presented the guest speaker in
absence of program chairman Mrs.
Elia Perez. The guest speaker was
Benito Trevino, who is editor for
the native plant section of the
Hidalgo County Museum
Cookbook. He has received many
awards for his environmental work.
He ij owner of Rancho Lomitas
Native Vegetation and Wildlife
Refuge. He spoke on "A Living
Classroom: Chachalaca Refuge."
He stated that the chachalaca is a
large bird, similar to a crow. It is p
shy bird, but brings many thousand
bird watchers to watch them.

served to the guest and following
members: Dorothy Anderson,
Vangie Anderson, Inez Carrera, Sara
Cruz, Florence Ann Garcia, Alma
Gloria Gonzalez, Nelda Laurel,
Dolly Olson, Judy Parks, Elda
Perez, Dora Perez, Rosario Pope,
Qucla Pope, Miriam Vale, Ofilia
Villarreal and Evita Ramirez.
