Alhambra debutantes to be honored at Nov. 23 tea *
El Cid Caravan No. 106 of the
Order of the Alhambra announces
two Rio Grande Valley girls who
will bow as debutantes on Dec. 27,
1997 at its traditional Christmas
Presentation Ball at McAllen Civic
Center.
Being presented as Misses arc
Kimberly Ann Guillen and Chri.sta
Unsinn.
Kimberly Ann Guillen is the
daughter of Mario A. Guilllen and
Nidia G. Leal and granddaughter of
Sir Noble and Mrs. Mario S.
Guillen of Rio Grande City,
members of the Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church.
Kimberly is a 16-year-old
sophomore at Memorial High
School in McAllen, where she
serves as a member of the
saxophone line for the Mustang
band. During her freshman year, she
was also a member of the Lady
Mustangs Softball team. Currently
the vice-president of Memorial's
FFA, Kimberly has earned both her
Grccnhand and Chapter Farmer
degrees and was also the recipient of
the chapter's Blue & Gold Award as
well as of the Diversified Livestock
Proficiency Award.
This summer she attended the
State FFA Convention in Amarillo
and this month she will be
competing in the District FFA
Leadership Contest as a member of
the Ag Issues Forum.
A member of the Town &
Country 4-H Club in Edinburg.
Kimberly is the parliamentarian,
preparing for competition in the
upcoming County 4-H Food Show
as well as in the Annual Winter
Vegetable Show..
This summer she attended the
District 4-H Leadership Lab at the
Texas 4-H Center in Brownwood.
With her mom as her sponsor, she
competed at the State 4-H Roundup
held at Texas A&M University in
College Station, where she won
second place with her method
demonstration in Farm & Ranch
Economics and received a $200
savings bond for her
accomplishment.
Kimberly's most recent honors
include being selected as a 4-H
ambassador for Hidalgo County, a
position for promoting 4-H by
undertaking speaking engagements,
public relations activities via radio
and television, and participating in
various social, academic, political,
and agricultural events in the
county. Kicking off the school year
as an ambassador, Kimberly served
as a hostess at the Annual 4-H
Country Hoe-down, a successful
and elaborate countywide benefit
primarily for 4-H scholarships.
As a favorite hobby, Kimberly
travels statewide with her dad,
showing various kinds of animals
ranging from lambs and goals to
hogs and steers. Like her brother,
Ryan, she has received numerous
Grand Championship and
Showmanship awards, plaques, and
buckles, as well as money prizes,
for her accomplishments. Last
spring, Kimberly earned the Grand
Champion title for her meat goat
entry at the Rio Grande Valley
Livestock Show in Mercedes.
During her spare time, Kimberly
loves listening to and singing

Kimberly Ann Guillen
Tejano, country, pop, and rock
music, recording a few of her vocal
performances with her mom. She
also enjoys watching the Memorial
Mustang soccer games under the
direction of her stepfather, Pat Leal.
When visiting her family in Rio
Grande City, she enjoys driving out
to the ranch with her grandparents
as they reminisce about the good
old days. Kimberly displays her
appreciation for their folklore by
wearing her grandfather's Army
bracelet as part of her daily attire.
Next summer, Kimberly plans to
iour France and Rome with
members of her Memorial French

Bosses Day
North Grammar Elementary
celebrated Bosses Day recently with
a full scale gathering.
It was held at the cafeteria, which
was beautifully decorated with
planters, posters, and balloons.
Principal Acevedo and the staff
enjoyed a menu of chicken
sandwiches, rugies, dip, chips,
cake, cookies, and punch.
Entertainment was provided by
Noemi Garza, who is a great singer
and also a staff member.
The staff enjoyed a respite from
the job and a chance to mingle and
visit with their peers. Mr. Acevedo
was presented with a beautiful
forest green jacket to go with the
school colors.
He also took the opportunity to
again congratulate the staff on their
recognized status and encouraged
them to keep up their good work.

from high school, she plans to
follow her family's tradition of
attending Texas A&M University at
College Station.
Christa Unsinn is the daughter of
Alfons and Patricia Unsinn of
Mission and is the granddaughter of
Sir Noble and Mrs. E.C. Lcrma of
McAllen. They are members of Our
Lady o.f Sorrows Church in
McAllen.
She is a 16-year-old junior at
Sharyland High School where she
has been a member of the varsity
swim team for three years as a
regional qualifier and district
medalist. She has also participated
in the Sharyland powerlifting team
during her sophomore year. She is
in the top ten percent of her class
with a grade point average of 4.63.
She is also a current member of
Students Against Drunk Driving
and the Fellowship of Christian
Athletes. She has attended C.C.D.
classes for the past 11 years and
equestrian riding for two years.
Christa also attended the
University of Texas at Austin
Swim Camp in the summer of
1996. She also worked as a
lifeguard and Gus N Goldie
instructor for the City of Mission.
She also worked in the Asthmatic
Camps, sponsored by the City of
Mission. In the summer of 1997,
she was a private swimming
instructor at her residence.
Christa plans to attend St.
Mary's University in San Antonio
as a pre-med student and then attend
the University of Texas at
Galveston in order to specialize in
reconstructive surgery. She hopes
to be able to work at M.D.
Anderson Cancer Center when she
obtains her medical degree.
Prior to their presentation at the
Alhambra Ball, Kimberly and
Christa will be honored at a
traditional tee which will be held on
Nov. 23 at Cimarron Country Club
in Mission. This annual event is
being hosted by the Sultanas of El
Cid Caravan No. 106 of the Order
of the Alhambra. £
These young ladies are
granddaughters of members of the
organization of which Sir Noble
Oton Guerrero III of Mission is
Grand Commander and Mrs.
Guerrero is the Grande Sullana.

Retired teachers hold meeting
The Starr County Retired
Teachers met recently at the San
1 Jro High School Library for their
regular October meeting with Mrs.
Olga Saenz, president, presiding.
Mrs. Saenz gave the invocation
and led in the Pledge to the flag.
Mrs. Minnie Guillen read last
month's minutes which were
approved after corrections. Mrs.
Olga Saenz, president, read a letter
from the Teacher Retirement
System which gave retirees the
option of responding if they wanted
their retirement recalculated. She
offered response sheets to those
who wanted a copy
Mrs. Ines Carrera, treasurer,
reported that the building fund
balance was S203.00. After a
collection was made, the balancc is
$152 which is owed to the treasury.
Mrs. Emma Falcon reported on
the proposed trip to Monterrey and
Saltillo. She gave the price for the
trip and noted that unless there were
enough signed up, the trip would
have to be cancelled.

reported that the Fall District
Convention would be held in
Brownsville on Nov. 8, 1997. She

It was announced that the Texas
State Bank's Freedom Club was
scheduled to have a meeting on
Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. at the
Multipurpose Center. The program f
was on antiques and their
preservation.
Delicious refreshments were
served by hostesses Guadalupe and
Elia Munoz, Emma Falcon, and
Celia Guerrero.

set for Nov. 21
I he first annual Rio Grande City
Community Health Fair will be
held on Friday, Nov. 21 from 7
a.m. to 2 p.m. at City Hall, located
at 101 s. Washington. £
I here will be consultants from
private and governmental agencies
available to answer questions on a
number of important health issues
and to provide services such as free
cholesterol screening, free blood
pressure check, free glaucoma
screening, and free diabetes
screening. _
A total of ?5 glucose monitors
