Catholic Daughters hold
first meeting in September
The Catholic Daughters of the
Americas, Court Our Lady of
Mercy No. 1968 held their first
meeting of the year on Sept. 25,
1997.
The meeting was held at the
monastic home of Sister Rosalia
Fink, Regent. Court Chaplain Fr.
Lee DaCosta began the meeting
with the Celebration of Holy
Eucharist. The intentions of the
mass was for the members of Court
Our I -ady of Mercy No. 1968.
The meeting was called to order
by Regent Sister Rosalia Fink.
Officers present were Vice-Regent
Thelma Ramirez, Financial-
Secretary Olga G. Garcia, Treasurer
Yolanda Garcia, and Recording
Secretary Ella Lou Saldana.
Reports were givenby committee
chairpersons on spiritual services
provided to the community by
members during the summer, and
also on scholarships awarded to
graduates related to CDA members
or JCDA. Edwardo Ramirez and
Brenda Lee Pena were awarded
scholarships.
Plans were discussed to attend the
Southwest Conference in M cAllen
on Oct.18997,, sponsored by
Catholic Daughters of the Americas
to celebrate National CDA Day on
Oct. 19, 1997. Celebration of Holy
Eucharist will be at the Virgen de
San Juan Shrine, with members of
District 21, 31 and 32
participating. Plans were also
discussed of activities that will be
sponsored by local CDA's during
the year.
The meeting was adjourned with
the prayer for vocation and closing
ode. The next meting will be on
Oct. 23, 1997 at 7 p.m. at the
Parish Hal. Any Catholic woman
interested in joining the Catholic
Daughters of the Americas are
welcome to attend the meeting.
RGC district seeks canned
goods for Pauline victims
The Rio Grande City
Consolidated Independent School
District is soliciting canned goods
for the Acapulco families suffering
the attermaih of Hurricane Pauline.
Students and stall are being asked
to bring donated canned goods to
either their children's school
campus, the Public Information
Office or to the MuIti-Purpose
Center on Fort Ringgold.
The Mexican consulate office and
the Centro Cultural Mexicano have
asked area school districts to
participate in a massive campaign
to bring relief to victims of
Pauline.
Mexican officials said other
organizations or individuals are
already donating clothes, bedding
and medications.
The officials have made
arrangements with Continental
Airlines to process the goods and
deliver them straight to Acapulco,
where designated persons have been
assigned to distribute the goods to
the people in need.

The Rio Grande City Band
Boosters met back in August 1997
to elect officers for 1997-98.
The officers elected were as
follows: First Vice-Prcsident-
Cynthia Montalvo; Second Vice-
President- Ruben Cantu; Secretary-
Sylvia Garcia; Treasurer- Micaela
Elizondo; Reporter- Alma Munoz;
Parliamentarian- Gonzalo Bazan;
Telephone Committee- Sonia
Galvan; Bar-B-Que Chairman-
Arturo Bazan; Chaperone
Chairman- Corina Vela; Chaparone
Co-Chairman- Alma Munoz.
Among the items discussed was
the construction of a 16-foot tower
for Miss Alejos to be used at the
new high school, with the cost to
the Band Boosters being
approximately $3000.
Also discussed was the ordering
of the Rattler Band T-Shirts. Every
year the Band Boosters purchase the
T-Shirts for the band students at a
cost to the student of $2.00 or a 12-
pack of sodas. This year the total T-
Shirts cost was on or about $2625,
which covered T-Shirts for students,
parents and teachers. Parents
purchase them at cosL
Some modifications were done to
the concession stand The Band
Boosters would like to thank Mr.
Eddie Dougherty, who proved to be
very handy with his tools.
The Band Boosters also would
like to thank everyone that helped,
and wish to say that they appreciate
each and every person for their
commitment to the club. The Band
Boosters express appreciation to the
parents who chaperone, the parents
who work in the stands, and Imelda,
who brings water and sodas every
Thursday to the students. These
sodas are donated from other
parents.
The Mighty Rattler Band has a
membership of 215 students who
have been working very hard. They
look "great", considering the
obstacles they have had to endure
says Miss Alejos, Band Director.
There will be a prc-contcst on
Saturday, Oct. 25 in Donna. Judges
from San Antonio, Laredo and
Midland will be present. The
Pigskin will be Saturday, Nov. 1 at
5:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 and can
be purchased from the band students
or the Band Booster officers.

4th grade TAAS test takers
Roque Guerra Jr. Elementary
School recently honored its current
fourth-grade students who received
academic recognition on one or
more areas of the TAAS.
The school's staff and Principal
Arturo Garza recognized the
students for their fine scores on the
Texas Assessment of Academic
Skills tests as third-graders.
