Arinda Arlyn Canales, a third grader at Emma Vera
Elementary School in Roma, was selected as a
candidate in the 1997 Miss Texas National Pre-Teen
Program which was held in Waco, Texas on March
14-1-5. The Miss National Pre-Teen Program is the
official State Program for the Miss National Pre-Teen
Program which will be held in Orlando Florida in
November 1997. This competition honors girls ages
9-12 for their academics and achievements. Arinda
Arlyn wa? the only youth selected from the Rio Grande
Valley.
Lori Peterson named
to St. Mary Law
School Dean's List
St. Mary's University School of
Law in San Antonio is proud to
announce the Dean's List for the
Fall semester.
Among those recognized is Lori
Lyn Peterson, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. James E. Peterson of Rio
Grande City. Lori is a candidate for
graduation in May, 1997.
The Dean's List is based upon
the top ten percent scholastically
for work done during the given
semester based on a minimum of
twelve semester graded hours per
semester in the long term. For the
1996 Fall Semester, those who had
a semester average of 3.36 or above
made the Dean's List.
Abel Anaya
promoted to
Army specialist
Abel Anaya has been promoted in
the U.S. Army to the rank of
specialist
The specialist is a
communications specialist in
Mannheim, Germany.
Anaya is the son of Porfirio and
Domitila Anaya of Roma. He is a
1994 graduate of Roma High
School.
The Romans began a hand-
written newssheet that was a
forerunner of today's newspaper
in 59 B.C.
Arinda Canales competes in
National Pre-Teen Program
Miss Arinda Arlyn Canales,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adrian
Noe and Dora Canales of Salineno,
was selected as a candidate in the
1997 Miss Texas National Pre-Teen
Program which was held in Waco,
Texas at the Waco Convention
Center and Holiday Inn on March
14-16.
Her sponsors include Canales
Bookkeeping Services of McAllen,
Canales Ranch/Adrian Noe and
Dora Canales of Salineno, Vera
Enterprises, Inc., of Roma, and
West Point Nursery of Rio Grande
City.
The Miss Texas National
Pre-Teen Program is the official
State Program for the Miss
National Pre-Teen Program, to be
held in Orlando, Florida in
November 1997. The Miss
National Pre-Teen Program is now
in its 17th year. It was the first
competition of its kind founded to
reward girls ages 9-12 for their
academics and achievements.
Miss National Pre-Teen is teamed
up with "Just Say No" as the
official national service
organization, and candidates are
encouraged to join existing or
charter new "Just Say No" clubs in
their hometowns to help in the
education of students to not try or
use drugs.

Texas Beta Zeta Omicron recently honored their 1997 Sweetheart, Gladys Rebecca
Garza. Gladys was presented with a yellow rose by 1996 Sweetheart Elda De La Cruz
at the recent annual Sweetheart Dance. Gladys was also recently chosen as an
attendant to the Sweetheart of Beta Sigma Phi International Sweetheart Beauty
Contest. Beta Zetu Omicron also carried out a successful Valentine's Day drawing,
with the winner being Paloma Pena.
Beta Zeta Omicron honors,
praises 1997 sweetheart
Texas Beta Zeta Omicron recently
honored their 1997 Sweetheart,
Gladys Rebecca Garza.
The 1996 Sweetheart, Elda Dc La
Cruz, presented Gladys with a
yellow rose at the annual
Sweetheart Dance. Beta Zeta
Omicron congratulates Gladys for
being honored as the 1997
Sweetheart
Gladys was also chosen as an
attendant to the Sweetheart of Beta
Sigma Phi International Sweetheart
Beauty Contest Gladys was chosen
out of thousands of entries and has
been the only Hispanic ever to hold
such a title.
A Beta Zeta Omicron leader
emphasized, "We are very proud of
Gladys and are proud of the
recognition she has brought to our
sorority and our city."
Beta Zeta Omicron also
congratulates Paloma Pena of Rio
Grande City, the winner of their
1997 Valentine's Day drawing.
Paloma received one dozen long
stem red roses arranged in a glass
vase, a box of chocolates and dinner
for two at the Olive Garden Italian
Restaurant in McAllen.
The drawing Is held every year to
benefit the National Breast Cancer
Fund.
Beta Zeta Omicron expresses
thanks to everyone who participated
in the drawing.
Arinda Arlyn was the only youth
selected from the Rio Grande
Valley. She attended this program
based on her academics and
achievements. She is an
eight-year-old third grade honor
student at Emma Vera Elementary
School in Roma.
Arinda Arlyn's exceptional
academic awards include Honor
Roll, Perfect Attendance and "Book
It" Reading Award every six weeks
from first through third grade.
Principal's "Top Out" Reading
Award and UIL third grade
Storytelling.
She is involved in the following
extracurricular activities: Girl
Scouts of America, "Emma Vera
Elementary Cubbettes" dancing
team and Danza Folklorica-Emma
Vera Elementary School. Arinda
Arlyn believes it is important to
obtain a higher education. She
aspires to be a veterinarian or an art
teacher.
