■ The Rio Grande Cily High
School Counseling Department
announced that the application
deadline for some 50 local
scholarships worth nearly $100,000
is March 28.
"We would like for students to
turn their applications in before
March 28 if they can," said Azalea
\511arreal, high school counselor.
Here is a list of some of the
scholarships, their amount and
other pertinent information.
1. American Association of
University Women ($550), for a
graduating senior boy or girl that
will be attending an accredited
college or university in the fall of
1996. Essay required.
2. ATPE ($500), for the son or
daughter of an ATPE member.
3. Alberta S. Vela Foundation
Scholarship (2-$ 1,000 each), for
one boy and one girl.
4. Alvarez, Alvarez Law Firm
($500), for the relative or member
of firm.
5. American Legion Scholarship
(Amount varies), for the
son/daughter of a member. Essay
required.
6. Caleme, Linebarger Graham &
Pefia Scholarship (5-$500 cach), for
a student with financial need who
demonstrates leadership.
7. Bass Club Scholarship ($200),
for a senior pursuing a career in
marine biology, fishery or wildlife.
8. Canales Brothers Memorial
Scholarship ($250), for a
graduating senior whose parents are
veterans. Essay required.
9. Catholic Daughters of the
Americas/Academic (amount
unknown) for a senior related to
any member of a Catholic
Daughter.
10. Catholic Daughters of the
Americas/Vocational (amount
unknown), For a senior related to
any member of a Catholic Daughter
who has taken at least two years of
vocational classes in Rio Grande
City High School.

Starr Historical
Society to meet
this Sunday
The Starr County Historical
Society will meet at 4 p.m. on
Sunday, March 10 at the La Borde
Hotel parlor.
The subject will be La Reforma
Ranch in northeast Starr County.
The program will be presented by a
member of the Guerra family,
descendants of the original founder,
Arcadio Guerra.
Everyone is welcome and
encouraged to attend.

LA JOYA — The Rio Grande
City High School junior varsity
and freshmen track teams came
away with diird-place finishes at the
La Joya Track Meet on Thursday.
"Congratulations to our freshmen
and J.V. track teams," coach
Elifonso Esquivel said. "They both
did an outstanding job. Both
divisions were very close to
winning the track meet."
La Joya won both divisions,
taking the J.V. division with 126
points, edging Edinburg at 120 and
Rio Grande City in third at 108.
Mission came in fourth with 101,
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo was fifth at
56, McAllen Rowe sixth at 32 and
McAllen High seventh with 15
points.
In the ninth-grade division, La
Joya recorded 157 points to top
second-place PSJA at 110. Rio
came in third with 95, followed by
Mission (71), McAllen Rowe (59),
McAllen High (36) and Edinburg
(14).
In the freshmen competition,
Abel Gonzales won two individual
first-place awards and joined in
helping the 1600-meter relay team
win its event by 30 yards over its
closest competitor.
Gonzales also won the long jump
and 110-meter high hurdles.

the Rio Grande City High School
freshman team.
Discus: Billie Vera, 5th, 99 feet.
High jump: Abel Gonzales, 2nd.

Mrs. Dolores Rodriguez won Grand Champion honors
in the Rose contest that was held Saturday as part of
the 1996 Starr Countv Youth Fair.
Deborah Trevino named to
College Who's Who program
Deborah Lina Trevino of Rio
Grande City is one of a small
number of students at Southern
Methodist University in Dallas that
have been selected for membership
in the 1995-96 WHO'S WHO
AMONG STUDENTS IN
AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES
AND COLLEGES honors program.
Deborah is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Leopoldo Trevino of Rio
Grande City. She is a senior at
SMU.
H. Pettus Randall, Director of
Who's Who Among Students In
American Universities and
Colleges, wrote the following letter
to Mr. and Mrs. Trevino:
