Megan Rae Gonzalez, the daughter of Jose and
Nlelanie Gonzalez, was born Feb. 3, 1996 in San
Antonio. Megan weighed 5 pounds, 9 ounces. She is
the granddaughter of Pete and Alba Garza of Rio Grande
City and Hilario Gonzalez of Rio Grande City. Her
maternal great-grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Reynaldo
S. Garcia.
Fair wild game dinner
set for Saturday night
Due to the weather, the annua!
Wild Game Fundraising Dinner of
the Starr County Fair, originally
scheduled for Saturday. February 3,
will be held on Saturday, February
17. Dinner will be served at 8:00
p.m., following cocktails at 6:30,
at the Starr County Fair Pavilion.
Musical entertainment for the
evening will be provided by Grupo
Zentencia, featuring lead singer
Melinda Mejia. The public is
invited to attend, and donations will
be accepted.
Over a dozen cooking teams are
busy making preparations for the
annual Wild Game Fundraising
Dinner, which officially kicks off
the Starr County Fair.

A Farm and Ranch Estate
Planning Seminar is scheduled for
Feb. 16, 1996 at R.Y. Livestock
Sales in Rio Grande City.
The program is scheduled to
begin at 10:30 a.m. Dr. Meritt
Taylor, Extension Economist, will
discuss many tax saving
alternatives to estate administration.
How much of your estate will

range from 37 to 55 percent for
estates above 5500,000.
This seminar is offered to provide
participants enough information on
tax and estate planning matters to
help them make difficult estate
Gallagher named
to honor society
at SWTSU
A junior at Southwest Texas
State University, Marilynn Barrera
Gallagher has been inducted into
Delta Tau Alpha, a National Honor
Society.
To be considered, students must
have and maintain a 3.5 GPA on a
scale of 4.0. This particular
organization also places much
emphasis on Agriculture. Marilynn
is an Animal Science major at
Southwest Texas State.
Marilynn's parents are Ret.

Garcia named to
Schreiner Dean's
List
Rebecca Garcia of Rio Grande
City has been named to the fall
1995 Dean's List at Schreiner
College in Kerrville.
She earned at least a 3.00
grade-point average on a full-time
schedule during the fall term. Garcia
is the daughter of Reynaldo and
Leticia Garcia and is a sophomore
exercise science major at Schreiner.
She graduated from Rio Grande
City High School in 1994.
Schreiner College is a small
co-educational liberal arts college in
the Texas Hill Country. Related by
choice and by covenant to the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),
Schreiner has been consistently
rated in the top quartile of western
liberal arts colleges by U.S. News
and World Report magazine.

RGCHS 9th graders
make All-Region Band
About 80 percent of the world's diamonds are suitable only for
industrial use.
Eight freshmen from Rio Grande
City High School recently earned
chairs in the Ninth-Grade All-
Region Band after one-on-one
competition with other ninth-
graders at Edcouch-Elsa High
School.
They are: Audra Gonzalez, 1st
chair (Oboe); Mike Lopez, 4th
chair (Flute); Julia Rangel, 7th
chair (Clarinet); Jackie Alvarez,
11th chair (Clarinet); Mario Lara,
3rd chair (French Horn); Severino
Garcia, 6th chair (French Horn);
Miriam Zurita, 8th chair (Tuba);
and Iris Duran, 9th chair
(Percussion).
"We are very proud of our
freshmen," said Melba C. Alejos,
director of music for the Rio
Grande City school district. "They

parents are invited to a parents
meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 20 from
6 to 7 p.m. at Starr Mall inside the
high school.
The topic of the meeting will be
the PTO and parental involvement.
The main purpose will be the effort
to organize a high school PTO.

competed at Edcouch-Elsa.
"The freshmen All-Valley
students have brought our total All-
Region count to 34. We have the
second highest total of All-Region
Band students next to Brownsville
Hanna High School," she said.
"We are encouraged by the
participation of band students in the
All-Region process and the hard
work of our staff."
