EDUCATORS ATTEND FALL CONFERENCE- The Rio Grande City (ISD was
well represented at the Fall Conference of the Association for Compensatory
Educators of Texas held in San Antonio in October. "Reauthorize, Reorganize, and
Revitalize" was the theme for the conference, with numerous edn< itional sessions
held at the Municipal Auditorium and the St. Anthony Hotel, 'ftlea Poms, lop row

RGCCISD carries out special
Veterans Day observance

Patriotic music and spccchcs
prevailed Friday, Nov. 11, in a
• celebration of Veterans Day among
Rio Grande City CISD students and
staff.
Veterans Day programs were the
highlight of the day from La
Grulla's two schools to Roque
Guerra Elementary.
At Rio Grande City High
School, half of Joe Sanchez
Stadium's west side was filled as
™ Student Council members, district
officials and local veterans saluted
the men and women who have
served in the military for this
nation.
Master of Ceremonies Joe Garcia,
Nancy V. Medina and Kennedy
^alinas introduced and managed a
one-hour ceremony that included
a spiraling songs, speeches of loyalty
to the United States and heartfelt
'hanks to veterans.
Medina gave a splendid and well
received vocal performance that
included the Star Spangled Banner
ind America the Beautiful.
About a dozen veterans who had
served in either World War II,
Korean War, Vietnam War or the
A Persian Gulf War were feted by the
Speakers and audience, who braved
cool temperatures and overcast skies
to attend.
The "Honoring Those Who
Served" program at the high school
stadium got under way when
Salinas welcomed guests and the
audience.
Following the invocation by

presentation of colors by the Rio
Grande City High School Law
Enforcement group, Medina sang
the National Anthem.
Garcia got the program off io a
good start when he read a narration

Guest speaker Luke Cox, a Ian
corporal in the military spoke
about his memories from the Gulf
War.
"1 remember being there and
asking myself 'What am I doiiu
here in the Gulf War ' Cox said.
"Then 1 remembered what ex
President (John) Ke n. dy said about
asking not what your country c >
do for you, but what you can do for
your country Then I thought who
else would be here if I wasn't?
The High School Jay./ Band next
performed Opus One, an upbeat
selection that was well-received by
the audience.
Medina then introduced the next
guest speaker, RGCCISD
Superintendent Ruben Saenz.
Saenz is a veteran who served in
the U.S. Air Force from 1955-59
and was promoted to the rank of
sergeant. He served in stations in
Alaska, Missouri and the District of
Columbia.
Saenz thanked the choir for
I rtforming The Battle Hymn of the
Republic, calling it one of his
favorite.
"I am proud to be a veteran,"
Saenz said "I'm also proud of my
fellow veterans."
Saenz related the story of how he
joined the Air Force. He said when
he a as a senior in high school that
his future possibilities included a
football scholarship, a position
with a minor league baseball team
or a slot with the military at West
Point
But he opted for the Air Force at
, ; ,( b n the draft was in full
swing.
"I did not want them to come
after me. I wanted to go first,"
Saenz said.
"1 fell a deep sense of personal
obligation to serve uniform ... like
Luke wore, I felt a tremendous
sense of pride in my country."

The Rio Grande City Garden
Club wishes to invite the public to
participate in the Garden-Yard of the
Month Contest.
The entry fee is $20.00 and the
deadline is Dec. 15. The rules are
simple— your yard must be
well-trimmed, lighting and lawn
ornaments are accepted.
The area participating is from
Midway to Garciasville to La
Sagunada. Judging will take place
on Dec. 17, 1994.
