The first place float in the youth category of Saturday's annual County Fair
Parade, produced by Little Miss Roma, is pictured above. The float was christened
with the theme "Children Around the World." This float was awarded a cash prize of
$100. This float was produced under the auspices of Xi Alpha Beta Chi of Roma.

from 2 to 4 p.m. on Feb. 26. From
4 to 6 p.m., dinner was served and a
dance was held for several hours
later that evening, with music
being provided by Los Artistas.

Rio Grande City is pictured above. The float was produced by La Casita Headstart
and was awarded a cash prize of $75. The float was christened with the theme
"Cowboys and Indians."

special appreciation to Frank and
Dorothy Anderson of Rio Grande
City for their longtime friendship.
Among DeLeon's family present
at the ceremony were his mother,
Elisena DeLeon of San Antonio,
and his brother, David DeLeon,
stationed with the Air Force in San
Antonio. DeLeon's mother-in-law,
Teresa Lara of Rio Grande City,
was also on hand.
Also attending were DeLeon's
sisters, Diana Perez of Alamo and
Minnie Parton of Alabama. Diana
Perez attended with her husband
Robert.
As part of his retirement
ceremony, DeLeon had the privilege
of reviewing troops and was
honored with a "piping aboard"
ceremony. Both are longtime
traditions for Navy retirement
ceremonies.
DeLeon was presented with a
plaque of appreciation and
commendation by Commander
McManus. He also was presented
with a "shadow box" filled with
ribbons and awards he has received
other for support."
Commander Rick McManus of
the Navy Recruiting Office in San
Antonio commented, "This
ceremony symbolizes the duty,
honor and integrity that the military
means to this country. Since July
1972, this man has gained plenty of
respect for his devotion to duty."
McManus noted that DeLeon,
since joining the Navy in July
1972, has served on the U.S.S.
Nashville for two and one-half
years, served three years at the
Naval Air Station in Bceville,
Texas, and served three years on the
aircraft carrier U.S.S. Forrestal in
the 1980's. DeLeon also served
three years with a Naval Attack
Squadron in the 1980's.
DeLeon concluded his active
service in the Navy by serving as a
recruiter in McAllcn. McManus
noted, "While recruiting from
McAllcn, he placed 109 persons on
active duty."
DeLeon declared, "We're all proud
of our military carccrs. I'm glad that
all of you can share this moment
with me." He bestowed special
thanks upon his wife, his mother,

OBITUARY
Julio Saenz
Julio Saenz, 26, died Saturday,
Feb. 27 of complications due to
AIDS.
Julio was a graduate of Rio
Grande City High School and
attended the University of Texas at
Austin. He was employed by
National Semiconductors in
Arlington, Texas.
He is survived by his father,
Julio Saenz, Sr., of Rio Grande
City; his mother, Marie Gomez of
Arlington, Texas; four sisters,
Jessica Saenz, Stephanie Guzman
and Heidi Saenz, all of Rio Grande
City, and San Juanita Martinez of
Arlington, Texas; three brothers,
David Charles Saenz and
Christopher D. Saenz of Rio
Grande City and Rolando Martinez,
Jr., of Arlington, Texas; two
grandmothers, Maria G. Griggs and
Jesusa Saenz, both of Rio Grande
City.
He is also survived by eight
uncles and eight aunts; one niece,
Cassandra Guzman; and one
nephew, Justin Guzman.
Caregivers were Becky and
William Griggs, Philip Achimon,
Eva Vasquez and a host of other
family and friends.
Rosary was held at 7 p.m. on
Sunday, Feb. 28 at the
Hughes-Southland Chapel. A Mass
of Christian burial was held at 10
a.m. on Monday, March 1 at the
Immaculate Conception Church in
Grand Prairie, Texas, with Father
Robert O'Rurke the celebrant.
Interment followed at Crown Hill
Memorial Park.
A memorial Mass will be held at
Immaculate Conception Church in
Rio Grande City on Saturday,
March 13 at 5:30 p.m.
