Roma Gladiators split two
district contests
The Roma Gladiators defeated
Los Fresnos and lost to Sharyland
in their two District 30-4A games
last week, with these results and the
continued sizzling play of
Edcouch-Elsa and Raymondville
dropping Roma out of contention
for a berth in the staie playoffs.
The Gladiators began their week
on Tuesday night, Feb. 9 with a
64-47 victory over the Los Fresnos
Falcons on the road. The Gladiators
led 10-4 at the end of the first
quarter, 29-14 at halftimc and 42-25
after three quarters.
The Falcons made a brief surge in
the fourth quarter to cut the deficit
to 12 points. The Falcons sank
three baskets from three-point range
in the fourth period, but the
Gladiators proceeded to increase
their lead again.
Roma Head Coach Octavio Cantu
commented, "We didn't play very
well in the first quarter, but we
picked it up in the second quarter.
Our inside people did a good job of
attacking the boards, especially on
the offensive side."
Cantu added, "Leo Mireles played
especially well in the second half.
Our inside people have been
responding well for us in recent
games...Mireles was a workhorse
for us, especially in the fourth
quarter."
The coach emphasized, "Simon
Garza played well off the bench,
especially on defense but also on
offense. Juan Carlos Munoz played
especially well in the second
quarter, scoring eight points on
drives to the basket."
The Gladiators hit 48 percent of
their shots from the field, and Leo
Mireles hit Roma's only
three-pointer.
The Falcons sank four three-point
baskets, with Bryan Olds drilling
three and Jeremy Stillman one.
The Gladiators sank 19 of 27 free
throw opportunities, compared to 9
of 12 for the Falcons.
Leo Mireles was Roma's leading
scorer with 21 points, and Juan
Carlos Munoz also reached double
figures with 14 points. The rest of
Roma's scoring went as follows:
Jerry Rosa, 9; Simon Garza, 7;
Heron Perez, 5; Onesimo Garcia, 5;
Juan Carlos Gutierrez, 3.
Bryan Olds was the leading
Falcon scorer with 24 points, and
was the only Los Fresnos player to
reach double figures.
Leo Mireles also had a superb
night on the boards with 19
rebounds, and Simon Garza and
Jerry Rosa each hauled down five
rebounds.
Simon Garza and Jerry Rosa
contributed five and three assists.
Heron Perez and Jerry Rosa
achieved six and three steals,
respectively.
On Friday night, the Gladiators
lost a 67-55 decision on the road to
the Sharyland Rattlers. Sharyland
led 18-13 after one quarter, 27-19 at
halftime and 47-35 after three
quarters.
The loss to Sharyland
extinguished all Gladiator hopes of
achieving a playoff berth.
Cantu noted that the Gladiators
briefly cut the Sharyland lead to
eight points in the fourth quarter,
but the Rattlers' free throw
shooting put the game out of reach.
The Rattlers converted 13 of 17 free
throw chances in the fourth quarter
and 25 of 32 for the entire game.
The coach indicated, "We came
out very cold. We had good shots,
but they weren't falling. We got
behind in the first half. We played
well in the second half, but it
wasn't enough."
Cantu added, "We did a good job
of passing to the open man, but our
shots weren't falling. We adjusted at
halftime and did a good job of
hitting our inside people."
Cantu declared, "Sharyland's
intensity was very high. They were
very fired up for this game.
Sharyland did a good job of moving
without the ball. They did a good
job of hitting the open man."
The Gladiators hit 41 percent of
their shots from the floor. Roma
sank two baskets from three-point
range, with Onesimo Garcia and
Leo Mireles hitting one apiece.
The Rattlers sank three baskets
from three-point territory as Tim
Mowery drilled two three-pointers
and Matt Brann hit one.
Free throw shooting was decisive
in the game's outcome as the
Falcons sank 25 of 32 chances from
the foul line, and converted 13 of
17 opportunities in the fourth
period. The Gladiators were 15 of
23 from the charity stripe.
Onesimo Garcia and Leo Mireles
both fouled out for the Gladiators,
with Mireles picking up his fifth
foul with less than 40 seconds
remaining in the game.
Leo Mireles was far and away
Roma's leading scorer w\h 25
points and was the only Gladiator
to reach double figures. The rest of
Roma's scoring went as follows:
Simon Garza, 9; Onesimo Garcia,
7; Juan Carlos Munoz, 5; Jerry
Rosa, 3; Juan Carlos Gutierrez, 2;
Yamil Barrera, 2.
Tim Mowery paced Sharyland
offensively with 19 points, and
Josh Haggerty and Bruce Dickson
also reached double figures with 15
and 11 points, respectively.
Leo Mireles also paced Roma on
the boards with 13 rebounds, and
Simon Garza and Juan Carlos
Munoz hauled down six and five
boards.
Jerry Rosa contributed five
assists, and Leo Mireles achieved
five steals.
The Gladiators, now 5-4 in
district play and 20-11 for the
season, were scheduled to conclude
their 1992-93 season at home
against the Mercedes Tigers on
Tuesday night, Feb. 16.

night's game on the road against the Edinburg High Bobcats. Rattlers Celso Garza,

70-69 victory. (.RGCCISD Photo).

The Rio Grande City Rattlers
played exceptional games last week
against two of the better teams in
District 31-5A, but came out on the
short end of the scoreboard with
two one-point losses.
The McAllen High Bulldogs used
a fourth quarter surge to achieve a
hard-earned 66-65 triumph over the
Rattlers in Rio Grande City
Thursday evening.
The Bulldogs led 16-11 at the end
of the first quarter and 34-31 at
halftime, but the Rattlers played a
sizzling third quarter to take a 55-50
advantage into the final period.
Rattler Head Coach John Brown
noted that the Bulldogs held the lead
exclusively until the third quarter,
when the Rattlers surged to a
five-point lead. The Bulldogs'
biggest lead was a six-point margin
in the second period.
Brown indicated that "it was a
one-point lead back and forth in the
last two minutes. They (McAllen)
blocked a layup attempt with 40
seconds remaining. They held on to
the ball for the rest of the game.
We fouled two or three times, but
since McAllen wasn't in the bonus
(to shoot free throws), they were
able to keep the ball away from
us."
Brown emphasized, "The kids
played hard and played well. They're
getting better all the time...The
kids have a great attitude."
The coach noted, "We passed the
ball inside real well to Guy
Peterson and Celso Garza. We were
able to take advantage of some

lot of shots under the basket."
Brown added, "At times, we
exerted strong defensive pressure
and we were able to shut off their
leading scorers most of the time.
They have a lot of talent and we
couldn't shut out everybody."
Brown concluded, "We made
some crucial mental mistakes late
in the game. We failed to run our
offense as it was designed late in
the game."
The Rattlers hit 46 percent of
their shots from two-point range
and sank 3 of 11 three-point
attempts. Matthew Miller drilled
two three-pointers and Rosbel Solis
hit one.
The Bulldogs sank two
three-pointers, with Chucky
Briseno and Sammy Contreras
hitting one apiece.
The Rattlers converted 10 of 15
free throw opportunities, compared
to 4 of 6 for the Bulldogs.
Guy Peterson was Rio's most
potent offensive force with 27
points, and Celso Garza and Mike
Margo also achieved double figures
with 14 and 10 points. The rest of
Rio's scoring went as follows:
Rosbel Solis, 6; Matthew Miller,
6; Ramiro Lopez, 2.
Clay Joyner was the leading
Bulldog scorer with 22 points, and
Chucky Briseno and Adrian Salinas
also reached double figures with 16
and 14 points.
Celso Garza and Guy Peterson
hauled down 10 and 9 rebounds for
the Rattlers.
Matthew Miller contributed five
assists, and Ramiro Lopez and
Mike Margo supplied four assists
apiece. Rosbel Solis and Matthew
Miller achieved three and two
steals, respectively.
On Saturday night, the Rattlers,
despite a tremendous fourth quarter
comeback, lost a light 70-69
decision on the road to the Edinburg
High Bobcats.
The Rattlers trailed by as many
as 18 points early in the fourth
quarter, but carried out a tremendous
comeback to cut the final deficit to
one point.
Coach Brown commented, "The
kids played very hard and very
well...Our kids just battled back the
entire game. I don't know if we can
play much better against a good
team."
The Bobcats led 16-13 after one
quarter, 37-35 at halftimc and 58-45
after three quarters.
Brown noted, "We trailed by
seven points with about one minute
| left in the game. We pressed late in
the game and forced a couple of
turnovers that led to a couple of
quick baskets for us."
The coach pointed out that the
Rattlers had the ball with 20
seconds remaining and had the
chancc to tic the game by hitting a
three-pointer. The Rattlers missed
one three-point attempt, got the
rebound, missed another
three-pointer and got the rebound
before hitting a two-pointer at the
buzzer to cut the final margin to
one.
Celso Gar/a and Guy Peterson
were a dynamic duo both
offensively and defensively as Garza
scorcd 23 points and snared 10
rebounds and Peterson poured in 22
points and hauled down nine
rebounds.
Brown declared, "We found a lot
of openings in their defense and

Peterson and Garza both converted a
lot of baskets inside. We had some
success shooting from the outside."
Brown noted that the Ra'tlers
trailed by as many as 12 poinis in
the second quarter before rallying to
cut the halftimc deficit to two
points.
Brown declared, "We played some
man-to-man defense and some zone
defense. At times, our defense kept
them off balance." An example of
Rio's defensive prowess was the
fact that Rodney Mayo scored only
four points in the second half after
pouring in 16 in the first half.
Brown emphasized, "Celso Garza
played a tremendous game. We did a
pretty good job of controlling the
tempo."
The coach concluded, "Edinburg
tried to run the fast break as much
as possible. They had spotty, but
not consistent, success with their
fast break. We did a pretty good job
of controlling their fast break."
The Rattlers hit 40 percent of
their shots from two-point range
and sank 4 of 10 three-point
attempts. Roumaldo Pena and Guy
Peterson each drilled two
three-pointers for the Rattlers.
The Bobcats were limited to one
three-pointer by Rodney Mayo.
The Rattlers converted 13 of 22
opportunities from the free throw
line, while the Bobci'ts were 11 of
15 from the charity stripe.
Celso Garza and Guy Peterson
were Rio's most powerful offensive
threats with 23 and 22 points,
respectively. Matthew Miller also
reached double figures with 10
points. The rest of Rio's scoring
went as follows: Roumaldo Pena,
6; Ramiro Lopez, 6; Baudelio
Perez, 2.
Rodney Mayo jnd Rober McGuric
paced Edinburg with 20 and 18
points, and Michael Valdez also
achieved double figures with 14
points.
Celso Garza and Guy Peterson
snared 10 and 9 rebounds,
respectively, and Matthew Miller
hauled down six more rebounds.
Mike Margo and Ramiro Lopez
each contributed five assists, and
Roumaldo Pena achieved three
steals.
Brown noted that the Edinburg
Bobcats are virtually assured of the
third place berth in the state
playoffs at this point.
The Rattlers were scheduled to
conclude the 1992-93 season at
home Tuesday night, Feb. 16
against the PSJA High Bears.
