Roma Gladiators victorious
in three of five games
The Roma Gladiators won three
of five games last week as they
registered a split in the four games
they played in the Tuloso-Midway
Tournament over the weekend.
The Gladiators began their week
on Tuesday night, Dec. 8 with a
77-60 triumph at home over Laredo
Cigarroa. Roma led 24-15 after one
quarter, 33-31 at halftime and 56-45
after three quarters.
Roma Head Coach Octavio Cantu
commented, "We had a very good
first quarter. We were hitting our
outside shots and the fast break
worked well. We had a rough
second quarter. Our cold second
quarter helped them (Cigarroa) get
back in the game."
Cantu added, "We responded real
well in the second half. We did a
very good job of taking care of the
basketball in the second half. We
played well in this game except in
the second quarter."
The Gladiators hit 45 percent of
their shots from two-point range.
Roma sank four three-point
baskets, with Jerry Rosa drilling
three and Luis Ramirez one.
Cigarroa was limited to one
three-pointer by Juan Castro.
The Gladiators sank 13 of their
22 free throw opportunities, while
Cigarroa converted 8 of 15 from the
charity stripe.
Juan Carlos Munoz paced the
Roma attack with 23 points and
Jerry Rosa had an outstanding
evening with 17 points. Joey
Garcia and Luis Ramirez also
reached double figures with 11
points each.
The rest of Roma's scoring went
as follows: Leo Mireles, 6;
Onesimo Garcia, 4; Joe Casso, 3;
Juan Carlos Gutierrez, 2.
Jerry Pina and Andy Mesa were
Cigarroa's leading scorers with 17
and 12 points, respectively.
Juan Carlos Munoz and Leo
Mireles were Roma's leading
rebounders with 8 and 7 boards.
Luis Ramirez contributed four
assists and Heron Perez achieved
three steals, with Jerry Rosa and
Luis Ramirez chipping in with two
steals apiece.
On Thursday night, the
Gladiators lost an 88-72 decision to
a highly regarded Tuloso-Midway
team in their first game of the
Tuloso-Midway Tournament.
Tuloso-Midway led 21-17 after one
quarter, 49-37 at halftime and 72-63
after three quarters.
Coach Cantu commented, "We
stayed with them for three quarters,
but they took control in the fourth
quarter. Luis Ramirez got into foul
trouble in the fourth quarter and
eventually fouled out."
Cantu stressed, "Tuloso-Midway
used their height advantage to the
fullest near the basket. They limited
us to one shot, especially in the
fourth quarter. Tuloso-Midway shot
the ball very well. They have a
6-foot, 7-inch player who can
handle the basketball very well."
Cantu declared, "Our running
game was real good for three
quarters. We did a good job of
handling the pressure for three
quarters and we ran the fast break
very well. We shot well for three
quarters, especially from the
outside. We had a good mixture of
layups and long-range shots."
The Gladiators connected on 44
percent of their shots from
two-point territory and drilled seven
three-pointers. Jerry Rosa sank five
three-pointers for Roma and Luis
Ramirez and Joey Garcia hit one'
apiece.
Tuloso-Midway sank two
three-point baskets, with Jerry
Oliver and Chris Rossi drilling one
apiece.
The Gladiators sank 19 of 25 free
throw opportunities, compared to 8
of 18 for Tuloso-Midway.
Jerry Rosa was Roma s leading
scorer with 24 points. Juan Carlos
Munoz and Joey Garcia also
achieved double figures with 16 and
11 points. The rest of Roma's
scoring went as follows: Luis
Ramirez, 9; Leo Mireles, 7; Simcn
Garza, 4; Heron Perez, 1.
Tuloso-Midway's balanced
scoring was paced by James Perrin,
who poured in 24 points. Richard
Perry, Jerry Oliver and Noe
Gonzalez provided valuable support
with 18, 15 and 14 points,
respectively.
Mireles and Munoz paced Roma
on the boards with 9 and 7
rebounds. Luis Ramirez and Jerry
Rosa each supplied five assists,
while Juan Carlos Munoz, Heron
Perez and Jerry Rosa contributed
four, two and two steals,
respectively.

defeated Orange Grove 67-62 Roma
led 21-18 after one quarter and
43-40 at halftime, but the score was
deadlocked at 53-53 going into the
fourth quarter.
Cantu said, "They (Orange
Grove) had to foul in the last two
minutes and we converted some key
free throws." Roma's biggest lead
was an eight-point margin in the
second quarter.
The Roma coach added, "We
didn't run the ball very much.
Orange Grove slowed down the
tempo and played a deliberate,
half-court game...Their guard, Ryan
Bowland, did a good job of both
penetrating and shooting."
Cantu noted, "We played a smart
basketball game at the end...The
first half featured a lot more
running by both teams. Our fast
break clicked well in the first half."
The Gladiators sank 59 percent of
their shots from the floor, with .
Jerry Rosa hitting their only

with 17, 17 and 16 points. Juan
Carlos Munoz, Simon Garza and
Joey Garcia rounded out the scoring
with 6, 6 and 5 points,
respectively.

Grove in contention by scoring 26
points and hitting four three-point
baskets. Snapper Nunez also
reached double figures with 11
points.

reboundcr with 11 boards and Luis
Ramirez chipped in with 6 more.

Rattlers achieve comeback
win over McAllen Rowe
The Rio Grande City Rattler
varsity basketball team achieved a
satisfying District 31-5A win with
a comeback 60-56 triumph over the
McAllen Rowe Warriors in Rio
Grande City on Tuesday night, Dec.
8.
The Rattlers led 14-12 after one
quarter, the score was tied 29-29 at
halftime and Rio held a 50-46 lead
after three quarters. Rio's biggest
lead was five points, but Rowe held
a four-point advantage with two
minutes remaining in the game.
Rattler Head Coach John Brown
stressed that the comeback win was
possible because "we played hard
and did the things we needed to do
to win. We played real good defense
at the end. Guy Peterson hit two
clutch free throws at the end that
cemented the victory."
Brown added, "We won it with
our defensive effort. Rowe had
averaged more than 70 points per
game. Rowe plays an aggressive,
trapping defense."
Brown noted, "Wc controlled the
tempo, but got some easy baskets
in the transition game without
playing speed-up basketball, which
we didn't want to play. We ran at
the pace which we wanted to run."
Brown stressed, "Defensive
intensity and controlling the tempo
were the keys to this game. Because
of their style of defensive play, we
weren't able to get many inside
baskets, but wc did convert a few
baskets on the inside."
The coach concluded, "Our kids
played one of their finest games of
the year. Hopefully, we will
continue to make steady
improvement."
The Rattlers hit 50 percent of
their shots from two-point range,
but missed all six three-point shots
they attempted.
The Warriors sank four
three-pointers, with Juan Aguilar
drilling three and Bobby Flores one.
The Rattlers converted 10 of 13
chances from the free throw line,
with Guy Peterson hitting 8 of 10.
The Warriors were 2 of 5 from the
charity stripe.
Guy Peterson paced the Rattlers
with 22 points and Mike Margo had
a strong offensive showing with 17
points. The rest of Rio's scoring
went as follows: Rosbel Solis, 7;
Ramiro Lopez, 4; Celso Garza, 4;
Abelino Bazan, 2; Matthew Miller,
2; Arcadio Salinas, 2.
Bobby Flores and Juan Aguilar
triggered the Warrior offense with
19 and 17 points, respectively.
Emilio Carmona also reached
double figures with 10 points.
Guy Peterson led the Rattlers on
the boards with seven rebounds, and
Arcadio Salinas and Celso Garza
chipped in with six and five
rebounds.
Ramiro Lopez and Roel Perez
each contributed four assists, and
Rosbel Solis achieved two steals.
On Monday night, the Rattlers
were defeated 76-35 by a powerful
McAllen Memorial team in a
district contest on the road.
Memorial led 20-6 after one quarter,
35-21 at halftime and 60-23 after
three quarters. At one point in the
first period, the Mustangs owned a
16-0 lead.
Coach Brown commented,
"Memorial shot very well. We
missed a lot of open shots and
