BIRTHS
The author tells of the incredible
record established by the legendary
football team since 1964, with four
state championships, 82.5 percent
wins, and with their worst record a
7-2 season.
Mrs. Rodriguez told of the
$70,000 football budget used to
charter jets for out-of-town trips and
of fans standing in line by Tuesday
to buy tickets to see their
illustrious heroes play on Friday.
She told of the ambitious
activities of the Booster Club,
which served thick steaks to the
athletes, and the special
considerations given by teachers,
who passed out answer sheets of
upcoming tests to the athletes.
The reviewer revealed that the
downside of the community were
the rough part of football, the
bigotry in the community, and the
compromised educational futures of
the athletes. Players were
encouraged to play injured.
Desegregation didn't take place until
1982 by order of a federal judge and
even then black and white didn't
mix except to play ball together.
Classes were not a priority.
Many teachers gave up bccause of
lack of rudimentary knowledge by
the students. In comparison to the
football budget, the English
Department was thrilled when it
received one computer to be shared
by its 25 teachers.
She also told of the radical
reactions of the fickle community
to losses. The coach, his wife and
family were harassed and "for sale"
signs hammered into their yard. The
town only wanted coaches who
would win, not bond with students,
build character or form lasting
relationships.
Mrs. Rodriguez slated that the
book was very insightful into the
lives of the teachers and athletes,
some of whom did go on to
succeed. Football was wonderful in
that it brought life to this isolated
town, but some people never
realized that there was more.
Study Club members answered
roll call al the meeting by telling
abo'jt the best book they had read.
