Calendar Girl Pageant
scheduled
The Ringgold Intermediate
School will host a Calendar Girl
Pageant on Saturday, May 23 at the
Auditorium.
Approximately 40 sixth grade
girls will be competing for a
calendar month The selection of
the candidates will be based on
poise, beauty, personality and the
gown chosen to wear. Gowns will
reflect the different months the
contestants represent.
The parental response ana
involvement has been so great that
Mr. L.T. Guzman, Ms. Mary
Rodriguez and Mr. Hcrbie Villarreal
have been assigned to coordinate the
pageant.
"This type of activity," says
Interim Principal J.M. Longoria,
"involves the community with the
school in a very positive setting."
He said it is hoped that this pageant
becomes an annual activity at
Ringgold Intermediate.

Willingham hit a sharp liner back
to Briseno, who threw to first base
for a double play.
With two outs and a runner on
second, PSJA catcher Mike Garcia
hit a long double off the wall in left
center to give PSJA a 1 -0 lead. But
right fielder Carlos Saenz grounded
out to the shortstop to end the
inning.
In the bottom of the second,
Miguel Villarreal led off the inning
for the Rattlers by hilling a long
drive over the left field fence, tying
the score at 1-1. Rene Cantu then
beat out an infield hit, stole second
and raced to third on a fly ball to
center, but Jerry Cavazos grounded
out to shortstop to end the inning.
In the top of the third, the Bears
had a runner on third with two outs,
but Briseno struck out Pat
Willingham looking to end the
inning.
With two outs in the bottom of
the third, Joe Briseno grounded a
single down the first base line and
stole second, but Orel Solis was
called out on strikes lo end the
inning.
In the top of the fourth, the Bears
broke through for two runs. Mike
Garcia led off with a double to Jeep
right center and George Ramirez
walked with one out. With two
out; Aaron Gonzalez slashed a
single to center tc bring home one
run.
With two outs, David Segovia
lined a double to deep left center,
scoring one run, but Gonzalez was
thrown out at home as Rio catchcr
Marco Bazan did an outstanding job
of blocking the plate. This play
gave new hope to Rio fans and
stalled PSJA's momentum.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Miguel Villarreal led with a walk
and moved to second on a sacrifice
hunt. Carlos Roman hit a fly ball
to right, but Villarreal was gunned
down on a pcrfcct throw to third
base.
Solis came in to pitch for the
Rattlers in the fifth and stymied the
Bears in the next two innings,
allowing only an infield single and

stranded there when Tony Avila
popped out to second.
The Rattlers then launched their
decisive four run uprising in the
bottom of the sixth to take a 5-3
lead.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Solis retired the first batter on a fly
ball lo center and struck out Lee
Gonzalez lcx)king. On an 0-2 pilch
with two outs, Kiki Trevino swung
and missed, but the ball gol away
from the catcher, allowing Trevino
to reach first base. Trevino then
reached second on a passed ball.
The Bears brought the tying run
to the plate in the person of Pal
Willingham, but Solis struck him
out swinging on a 2-2 pitch.
The victorious Raltlcrs pounded
out nine hits and were charged with
one error. The Bears slammed five-
hits and committed two defensive
miscucs.
Miguel Villarreal paced the
Rattlers at the plate with a home
run and a double. Rene Cantu was
also 2 for 2, and Joe Briseno
slammed two hits, including a
triple. The winning run came in on
Ricky Marroquin's infield single in
the sixth.
The stage for the showdown was
set Thursday night as the Bears
defeated Edinburg North 5-0. On
Tuesday night, May 5, the Rattlers
whipped the Edinburg High Bobc ats
11-0 in a five inning game at
home.
The victorious Rattlers pounded
out 14 hits and did not commit an
error. Rio starting pitcher Joe
Briseno limited the Bobcats to one
infield single, walked none and
struck out nine

for six runs. Carlos Roman led off

Villarreal belled a two run triple off
the left field wall to give Rio a 4-0
lead. Villarreal came in to score
when Rene Cantu grounded out.
Tony Avila then singled up the
middle. Marco Bazan lined a
run scoring triple to right center,
and Jerry Cavazos slammed a single
to left center to score the sixth and
final run of the inning.
Two more Rattlers crossed home
plate in the fourth inning. Joe
Briseno led off with a single to
right and Orel Solis singled to left,
with Briseno moving to third on a
wild pitch. Briseno scored when
Miguel Villarreal grounded out, and
Rene Cantu doubled to right ccnter
to score Solis.
In the fifth inning, the Rattlers
ended the game with two more
runs. Jerry Cavazos struck out, but
reached first on a passed ball.
Robbie Vasque/ walked, and the
two runners advanced on a passed
ball. Pinch-hitter Ricky Marroquin ^
then hit a two run single to end the
game.
Orel Solis paced the Rattlers at
the plate by going 3 for 3 with a
triple and 2 RBI's. Joe Briseno went
