Roma Catholics honor
Father Keralum's memory
q By SYLVIA CANALES
Our Lady of Refuge Catholic
Parish in Roma has maintained its
traditional celebration of pioneer
faith as Father Pedrito Keralum,
O.M.I., was remembered on the
119th anniversary of his
disappearance and death.
A Mass officiated by Father Roy
^ Snipes, O.M.I., and a drama based
on Father Keralum's life and death
look place on Nov. 9 as a reminder
of the proud heritage of the
community of Roma and its
surrounding areas.
Father Keralum founded and built
the first church in Roma in 1853 of
which the original splendid Gothic
tower still stands as a beautif ul pan
A of the present church.
High School Junior CCD
students were directed by Mrs. Iscla
V. Gonzalez, Mrs. Lcticia Cadena
and Mrs. Lcticia Garza, CCD
tcachers, who wrote a new play
featuring seven scenes which
included "Young Peter's Decision";
"The Ordination of Father Peter
Keralum"; "The Farewell of Father
® Keralum from His Beloved France ";
"The Arrival in Port Isabel"; "The
Missionary 'Padre Pedrito"'; "The
Roma Church"; and "The Death of
Father Keralum".
Starring in the leading roles were
Altar boy Eric Gutierrez, portraying
Father Pedrito Keralum and as the

announcement that the very cross
Father Keralum wore at the time of
his death was here on the Altar with
our Oblate priests, Father Roy and
Father Francisco Javier, members
of the same order Father Keralum
brought to us.
The cross was displayed by
Father Roy and used in the final
blessing to conclude the Mass.
Father Roy also mentioned in his
concluding remarks that our beloved
Father Sco, now a Roma oblate,
reminds us so much of what is
kno>vn of Father Keralum's way of
preaching the Gospel.
"Our own community is honored
by this great tradition of sacrifice
