Columbus Day proclaimed
in Starr County
County Judge J.M. Martinez, Jr.,
h;LS proclaimed Monday, Oct. 14 as
Columbus Day in Starr County.
The proclamation signed by
Judge Martinez reads as follows:
"WHEREAS, CHRISTOPHER
COLUMBUS' great voyage to the
New World in 1492 required vision,
courage and determination, his
discovery changed the course of
world history, and his name is
deservedly honored in history; and
"WHEREAS, Columbus
ventured into uncharted seas,
disregarding the advice of
supposedly learned men, becausc he
had faith in God, faith in his own
conviction, and faith in his
capabilities as a navigator; and
"WHEREAS, it is filling that
America annually pays tribute to
the memory of the famed Genoese
explorer on the anniversary of his
historic voyage;
"NOW, Therefore, I hereby
designate in accordance with this
tradition, Monday, Oct. 14 as
Columbus Day. I urge our citizens
to observe this day in a manner that
will dramatize and restate the
fundamental principles of faith,
wisdom and courage which guided
the footsteps of the Great
Discoverer."
Starr County Food Pantry
report for September 1991
The Starr County Food Pantry
has issued its financial and
operations report for September
1991.
The Food Pantry is composed of
community volunteers. The
purpose is to feed families in
emergency situations. The Pantry
houses the Emergency Box
program, the Salvation Army, and
the second hand store.
The Food Pantry received the
following financial donations; First
Baptist Church, $30; Primera
Iglcsia Bautista, $15; Iglcsia
Cristiana Emmanuel, S5; Rio
Nutrition Center, $21; La Grulla
Nutrition Center, $7.25; El Ceni/.o
Community Center, $7; Pantry
Cannistcr (Kramer's), $3.30;
Clothes Sales, $52.65; Barbccue
plates, $126.65.
The previous balance of
$1637.03 and expenses of $77.15
resulted in a present checkbook
balancc of $1827.58.
H.E.B Food Store donated bread,
and El Chaparral donated one case
of fideo. Valley Mart donated two
■ eases of tomato sauce, and Valley
Mart Express donated one case of
fideo. Kramer's Quik Stop donated
$10.
Clothes donations were made by
Zclda Lopez, Anita Rodriguez,
Aurora Guerra, Mizzic Olivares, and
lima Garcia.
A total of 33 families were served
witli the Emergency Box program.
A total of 315 hours were worked
by the Food Pantry as follows:
Maria Romero, 120 hours; Imelda
Crosby, 120; Hortencia Torrcz, 22;
Fclicitas Trevino, 19; Irma Guerra,
17.5; Natividad Hull, 5.5; Amparo
Monies, 4; Estella Solis, 4;
Minerva Torrez, 3.
The Food Pantry thanks all the
volunteers for their outstanding job.
A Pantry spokesman said, "We
really appreciate it. Without your
help, we couldn't succeed. Thanks
again."
San Juan Church to
hold observance
Our Lady of Fatima Feast Day
will be observed on Sunday, Oct.
13 with a Holy Mass at 7 p.m. at
The Shrine of Our Lady of San
Juan in San Juan.
The Mass will be observed by
Rev. Charles Becker and Rev.
Hector Vega. A "Prayer From the
Heart" will be observed after the
Mass by Brother David Ixipez.
A church spokesman said,
"Father Vega will talk about Our
Pilgrim Mother and her Shrine in
Rockport. The Shrine of Our Lady
of Schoenstat focuses on the
family. He will tell us how we can
actively support family prayer and
unity."
The spokesman added, "Fr.

Students prepare for TAAS---Students at Ringgold Elementary were encouraged to
do well on the TAAS through a variety of activities, including a poster promotion
and several pep rallies. The Ringgold Elementary Library staff supported the effort
by decorating the cafeteria and sending every third and fifth grade class a greeting
card and balloon congratulating them for working so hard to get ready for TAAS.

Becker was in Mcdjugorje last June
when Channel 4's Pat Guillermo
interviewed him for the CBS
Special that aired in July. Father
Charlie is from Chicago and had a
trip planned to Mcdjugorje this
October, however it was cancelled
due to the civil war and he is
coming to the Rio Grande Valley to
visit. We arc so pleased that he will
be able to celebrate the Mass with
us on this very special day."
The spokesman indicated that at
6:30 p.m. a rosary will be observed
in remembrance of babies that have
died as a result of abortion. The
spokesman said, "Mass intentions
are for the Youth of the world and
for Vocations."

recently at Starr County Memorial
Hospital.

Rio Grande City are the parents of a
son, Rolando Ruben, born Sept. 24
and weighing 7 pounds, 14 1/2
ounces.
Mr. and Mrs. Rene A. Gonzalez
of Rio Grande City are the parents
of a son, Rene Alonso, Jr., born
Sept. 26 and weighing 9 pounds, 1
ounce.
Mr. and Mrs. Armando Gonzalez
of Mission arc the parents of a son,
Armando, Jr., born Sept. 26 and
weighing 8 pounds, 4 ounces.
Mr. and Mrs. Francisco J.
Trevino of Rio Grande City are the
parents of a son, Eduardo, born
Sept. 27 and weighing 6 pounds,
15 ounces.
Mr. and Mrs. David Corrca of
Garciasville are the parents of a
daughter, Janett, born Sept. 27 and
weighing 6 pounds, 14 1/2 ounces.

Retama Manor to sponsor
Halloween coloring contest
Retama Manor Nursing Center,
as part of their Halloween
Door-to-Dwr Knocking Adventure,
will be sponsoring a coloring
contest for community children.
The entry blanks for the contest,
which include the picture to be
colored, can be picked up at Winn's,
H.E.B., Valley Mart and Retama
Manor in Rio Grande City.
"The picture must be relumed to
Retama Manor by October 22 and
judging of the pictures will be done
by Ms. Belia Guerra and Mrs.
Esther Alvarez," explained Ms.
Elvia Perez, Social and Activities
Director.
"Both Ms. Guerra and Mrs.
Alvarez arc employees of Winn's
Store who have volunteered their
time in helping with the program,"
said Ms. Perez.
"Winners of the contest will be
announced Halloween Night during
Retama's Door-to-Door Knocking
Adventure and prizes will be
awarded according to Administrator
Florencio Lopez. Mr. Lopez said,
"We have had some terrific prizes
donated by local merchants and
businesses."
