Beta Sigma Phi To Honor Sweethearts, Debutantes

Beta Sigma Phi will honor its
sweethearts and debutantes at their
annual Valentine dance, scheduled
for Saturday, Feb. 3 at 9 p.m. at
the A&E Ballroom between Rio
Grande City and Roma.
Lilia Belinda Pena-Muniz is the
1990 Sweetheart for Beta Alpha
Beta. She is an honor graduate from
Roma High School, and an honor
graduate from Pan American
University as well, majoring in
Education with a minor in English.
Lilia is married to Roberto
Muniz and has three children,
Roberto, Jr., a seven-year-old honor
roll student from F.J. Scott
Elementary School; Juan Gilberto,
a very active pre-kindcr, five years
old; and Lilja Christina, a
nine-month-old who stays at home
with Mom.
Lilia is a member of Our Lady of
Refuge Catholic Church, and of the
Catholic Daughters of America.
She is a catechist teacher for the
C.C.D. classes for the pre-kinder
and kindergarten classes.
Lilia is also a member of the
"Club de Jardincria" in Miguel
Aleman, Tamps. She belongs to
the Bunco Club of Zapata, and to
the Zapata County Fair
Association. Lilia has been an
active member of her sorority,
holding various offices throughout
the years. She is presently the
corresponding secretary for the
sorority.
Lilia enjoys reading, crocheting,
and traveling. Most of all, she
enjoys spending time with her
family.
Marina Salazar, presently
attending Roma High School as a
senior, has recently transferred from
McAllen Memorial High School.
She resided in McAllcn most of her
life. Norma was active in church,
community and school activities.
While attending Memorial, she
was part of Pranccrs, the drill team,
and the Memorial Mustang
marching band. She traveled to
various schools performing skits
about teenagers and their
"problems" with Planned
Parenthood's Active Community
icen Theatre. She has also danced
and performed for.Melba's School
of Dance for 11 years.
Roma has been a wonderful, yet
different, experience for Marina.
She has continued to be involved in
church activities, as well as school
functions. She is currently
Secretary of the Drama Club,
Representative of the Spanish
Club, a member of the Literary
Club, and an active member of
Student Council. The Student
Council has-allowed her to join in
the fight against drugs in the
committee S.M.I.L.E.
Marina is in U.I.L. events such
as Literary Criticism, Ready
Writing, Duet Acting, and just
recently. Poetry. Marina loves to
dance, therefore, she has now joined
the Starr Ballet Company to
complete her 12 years.
Marina, being presented by her
aunt, Maria Alicia Garza of Alpha
Sigma Phi, local chaptcr of Beta
Sigma Phi, is the daughter of
Federico and Victoria Salazar.
Maria Luana was an honoi
graduate from St. Ann's Parochial
Middle School in Fremont, Ohio.

an altar girl.
An accomplished saxophone
player, she nlayed with the Mighty
Stinger Band for three years. She
also was on the starting lineup for
the Lady Stingers volleyball and
basketball teams. Simultaneously,
Luana was a varsity cheerleader lor
the St. Ann's Stinger championship
team.
After eighth grade graduation,
Luana's family relocated to
Kingsville, where she enrolled at
Henrietta M. King High School. At
King High, Luana was an active
member of the Student Council, the
Community Service Band, and the
mighty Brahma Marching and
Concert Bands. She also
participated in the select Brahma
Band that traveled to Washington,
D.C. lor the American Heritage
Music National Invitational.
While in Washington, the band
was invited to perform on the steps
of the Lincoln Memorial, where
they opened with a resounding
arrangement of "Jalisco, Jalisco!" to
an applauding crowd. The
week-long trip closed with an
informal party hosted by
congressman Solomon Ortiz of
Corpus Christi.
Her freshman year, Luana's short
story "Midnight Terror" arid poem
"Maria's Song" were selected for
^exhibition in the Annual Challenge
(Gifted and Talented) Fair Her
sophomore year, her project, this
lime an historical pictorial collage
entitled "Poverty, Prejudice, Power
and Politics," was again selected to
be exhibited at the Challenge Fair.
In the spring of 1989, Luana's
saxophone ensemble placed first in
area, first in region, and second in
state competition. She lettered in
band and was presented with a

The summer of 1989 brought a
move for Luana and her parents.
She is currently an honor student at
Rio Grande City High School,
where she is a zealous member of
the junior class and the prestigious
Rattler Band.
Luana is currently in preparation
for U.I.L. competition in Ready
Writing. Most recently, she
achieved the top score on the
Practice Standard Achievement Test
at Kiu Oidiu.'e City High School.
Hopefully, following graduation in
1991, Luana faces the final decision
between Texas and Texas A&M to
pursue a {mme in the field of
Clinical Psychology.
Luana's hobbies are music,
reading, writing, swimming and
practicing her bass guitar. Maria
would like to thank the sorority,
the community, and her old and
new friends for making her, along
with her family, feel so welcome to
their recent move home.
Maria Luana, being presented by
her aunt, Mrs. Felicia G. Garza, of
Alpha Sigma Phi, local chapter of
Beta Sigma Phi, is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Enrique Gonzalez.
Paternal grandparents arc Mrs.
Antonia Guerra Gonzalez and the
late Crisoforo Gonzalez and
maternal grandparents were the late
Mr. and Mrs. Filcmon Garza, Sr.,
all of Rio Grande City.
Yolanda Gonzalez is the 1990
Sweetheart of Alpha Sigma Phi.
She is a graduate of Roma High
School and the University of
Texas-Pan American in Edinburg.
She majored in Elementary
Education and is presently a third
grade teacher at F.J. Scott
Elementary School.
Yolanda is married to Danelo I.
Gonzalez. They have three children:
Mary Lou, a student at the
University of Texas at San
Antonio; Danny, a sophomore at
Roma High School; and Roggie, a
fifth grader at Roma Intermediate
School.
Yolanda is a member of Our Lady
of Refuge Catholic Church. She is
a catechist for the C.C.D. classes
preparing First Communion
candidates. Yolanda is a member of
the Catholic Daughters of America,
in which she was treasurer for two
terms and presently holds the office
of financial secretary.
Yolanda is a very active member
of her sorority. She was elected
secretary when the sorority was first
organized. She was then elected
Vice-President and now holds the
position ol president. She has been
very instrumental in organizing a
Little Miss Roma Pageant
sponsored by the sorority.
Yolanda enjoys cooking, reading,
and spending lime with her family.
Elsa R. Villarreal by her aunt,
Mrs. Basilio Villarreal, Jr., from
Beta Alpha Beta of Beta Sigma Phi.
Elsa is the 16-year-old daughter of
Mrs. Edna Villarreal of Edinburg
and the granddaughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Basilio Villarreal, Sr., of Rio
Grande City.
Elsa is an honor student at Rio
Grande City High School. She is
presently in the lOlh grade. She has
been a member of the Wind
Ensemble Band for two years, as
well as a member of the Mighty
Rattler Marching Band. Elsa has the
honor of being selected into the
Who's Who Among American High
School Students and awarded the
United States Student Council
Award.
This summer Elsa will take part
in the Lorenzo De Zavala Youth
Legislative Session. She is a
member of the Rio 4-H Club. Elsa
is an active two-year member of
Student Council; she also enjoys
working with her debate team.
Her hobbies include cooking,
writing, baby silting, and dedicating
her time to her chemistry studies.
Elsa plans to attend the University
of Texas at Austin, where she plans
to major in Pharmacy, and
eventually obtain a degree in
anesthesiology.
Maria Olivia M. Gar/a is married
to David L. Garza and has two
sons, Antonio Amancio and Javier
Rene. She was born and raised in
Mission and is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Felix T. Marline/..
Mrs. Garza graduated from the
University of Texas at Austin with
a Bachelor of Science degree in
Home Economics and later received
a Master of Arts degree in
Curriculum Instruction.
She presently serves as president
of Alpha Chi Epsilon and has
served as treasurer. She is also a
member of the Florence J. Scoll
Sludy Club, UT Exes Steering
Committee and the newly formed
friends of the Starr County Public
Library.
She enjoys reading, writing and
outdoor activities.

Marine Recruit
Training
Marine Pfc. Armando Salinas,
son of Enrique and Hilda B. Salinas
of Route 1 in Rio Grande City, has
completed recruii training at Marine
Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego.
During the 13-week training
cycle, Salinas was taught the basics
of battlefield survival. He was
introduced to the typical daily
routine that he will experience
during his enlistment and studied
the personal and professional
standards traditionally exhibited by'
Marines.
He participated in an active
physical conditioning program and
gained proficiency in a variety of
military skills including first aid,
nfle marksmanship and close order
drill. Teamwork and sell-discipline
were emphasized throughout the
training cycle.
