Ringgold Intermediate
Holds PTO Meeting
RINGGOLD INTERMEDIATE
HOLDS PTO MEETING
Ringgold Intermediate School
held a PTO meeting on Wednesday,
Oct. 18 at the Fort Ringgold
Auditorium.
Mrs. Josie Guerrero, President,
opened the meeting with a welcome
message and talked about the forms
that were passed out. The form
discussed was for the purpose of
signing up members.
Parents paid their dues and
volunteered for committees dealing
with beautification of the campus,
fund raisers, chaperones, and other
committees.
Mr. Julio Saenz, Jr., Principal,
presented the compulsory attendance
law. His main focus was on the fact
that now students have to attend 80
days during the semester in order to
receive credit in a class.
The first semester contains 86
days while the second semester
contains 89 days for a total of 175
school days. He emphasized that the
student can only miss six days the
first semester. If the student missed
seven or more days, the parent must
present documentation to the
committee to consider for that
student to get credit.
When returning to school after an
absence, students must bring a note
signed that describes the reason for
the absence; notes signed by the
student, even with the parent's
permission, are not acceptable.
The District Attendance
Committee will consider the
documentation and approve credit if
the parents can prove that the
absences are the results of
extenuating circumstances.
The District shall accept the
following as extenuating
circumstances for the purpose of
granting credit for a class: personal
sickness, sickness or death in the
immediate family, quarantine,
weather or road conditions making
travel dangerous, participation in
approved extracurricular activities,
religious holidays, and any other
unusual cause acceptable to the
Attendance Committee.
If the Attendance Committee
finds that there are no extenuating
circumstances for the absence, the
committee shall deny credit for the
class even if the class grade average
is above 70. Students whose
petitions for credit are denied may
appeal the Attendance Committee's
decision to the Board.
Mr. Saenz told the parents that
this law was passed by the Texas
Education Agency and that he, as
principal, must enforce it. He urged
them to keep the documentation for
the absences as they happen. He
added that it would be very hard for
the committee to accept the parents'
word without documentation.
Mr. Saenz said, "Also, it would
be very hard to remember in
February the reason for an absence
in September or October."
After the meeting, the parents
went to the students' homerooms to
pick up the report cards. They also
went to the different teachers to
discuss grades and progress of their
children.
