the county fair or a county medal,
but one of the most valuable and
meaningful is being selected as an
officer of the 4-H Club
. Members of 4-H serving their
club as officers do so by setting
goals and applying the knowledge
gained and skills developed in
leadership projects developed as
they learned by doing
Through their roles as officers,
1 H'ers also develop skills and gain
confidence in making their voices
heard and their ideas carried out
.and made realities.
. On Monday, Oct. 5, a group of 21
4-H officers of the Rio 4-H club
were officially installed by County
Judge J.M. Martinez, Jr The judge
spoke to the group about the
importance of developing "leader-
ship" skills that helps them un-

dent of-the Starr County 4-H Adult
Leader Club at the club's meeting
recently
Eloy Perez was elected to serve
as vice-president along with a
vice president from San Isidro who
will be elected at a later date.
These officers will also serve as
District Delegates

secretary of the organization;

Graduates From TWL
Maria Isabel Pena of Rio Grande
City was one of 400 students to be
awarded degrees in recent com
mencement exercises held by Tex
as Woman's University in Denton.
The commencement exercises on
Aug. 15 brought to over 1500 the
degrees conferred during the
1987-87 school year.
Pena, the daughter of Mr and
Mrs. Apolonio Pena. Jr., graduated
with a Master's Degree in Library
Science. She also has a B A in
Psychology from the University of
Texas at Austin.

warded 164 bachelor degree, 205
master's degrees, and 31 doctoral
degrees to graduate.

to have the county judge at the
installation ceremonies. Many
4-H'ers ace carrying citizenship
projects and have on going 4-H
projects and activities dealing with
vital community issues facing our
county government
Rio 4-H officers are as follows:
Linda Guerra, president, Jesse
Guerra and Willie Gonzalez,
vice-president. Amy Gonzalez and
Laura Guerra, secretary; Arnoldo
Gonzalez and Carlos Margo. trea-
surer; Ricky Lopez, Melissa
Gonzalez, Nydia Sepulveda, and
Ysa Gonzalez, council delegates.
Eddie Lopez and Prissy Olivarez,
reporter; Aleida Garcia, Neida
Lopez, Cindy Gonzalez, and Kathy
Garza, recreation leaders; Roel
Santa Maria and Ana T Solis,
parliamentarian; Armando
Navarro, Jr., and Lyla Garcia,
attendance officer.
Roma High School students en-
joyed a Freshman Initiation Night
(F.I.N.) party on Thursday, Oct. 1
in the high school mall area from 7
to 10:30p.m.
Mrs. Nidia Guillen, RISD coun-
selor for the alcohol and drug
awareness program, coordinated
the activity with the McAllen
Coca-Cola Company A colorful
menu included a variety of non-
alcoholic "tropical fruit mixed
drinks" called Tropic Cooler,
Cherry Kiss, Rose Bitter, and Club
Fizz. Sylvia Valenciana and
Rosario Saldivar, both seniors,
helped make preparations for the
drinks.
Mixing the drinks and garnishing
them with citrus fruits, the follow-
ing seniors served as "bartenders''
for the evening Raul Rodriguez,
Pedro Alvarez, Eli Barrera, Ana
Cruz, Ruben Roberto Guerra,
Martin Canale III, Carlos Chapa,
and Manuel Alvarez. Additional
drinks from a soda fountain were
served by Lupita Rivera, Frances
de Luna, Lourdes Rodriguez, and
Marilou Alaniz.
For the freshman initiation,
members of the senior class of
1988, under the sponsorship of
Ricardo Perez, served as the hosts.
Jose Roberto Garcia, Jr , senior
class president, organized com-
mittees for the initiation activities,
which included "Fat the Cool
Whip", "Simon Says", "Musical
Chairs," and "Balloon Popping
Relays."
The following are the seniors who
organized the activities: Marissa
Barrera and Lori Vale; Melissa
Gonzalez and Sara Trevino, Lorena
Martinez and Norma Gonzalez;
and Barbara Naranjo and Annette
Alaniz In addition, the students
danced to various kinds of disco
music, provided by Orlando
Rodriguez, Sylvia Valenciana, and
Francisco "Frankie" Guerra IV.
The following sponsors
supervised the activity: Cynthia
Alaniz, Naomi Arnold, Evan
Butcher, Leticia Cadena, Guada-
lupe Cortez, Abraham Gonzalez,
Heraldo Gonzalez, Vidal Hinojosa,
Delma l.ara, Zelda Lopez, Estelle
Maxwell, James Merrow, Bonnie
Miller, Elda Perez, Eliza Ada
Perez, Ricardo Perez, Maricela
Ramon, and Oralia Ramon.

sponsor.
Colorful, artistic posters depict-
ing the dangers of using drugs and
alcohol and inviting students to join
Mrs. Guillen's PAL. (Peer
Assistance and Leadership) pro-
gram were designed by Raul
Rodriguez and displayed
throughout the party area
The Miss Starr County Pageant,
sponsored by the Rio Grande City
Lions Club, is scheduled for Satur
day, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the High
School Auditorium.
First, second, third, and fourth
place prizes will be awarded In the
event that the winner cannot fulfill
her duties as Miss Starr County
during the year, the first runnerup
will then preside. She will repre-
sent the Rio Grande City Chamber
of Commeice in several activities
throughout the year.
The highest ranking contestant
from Rio Grande City, after the
selection of Miss Starr County, will
be named Lions Club Queen. She
will participate in the Starr County
Festival Parade and several Lions
Club activities throughout the year,
including the District Lions Club
Beauty Contest.
Each sponsor in Starr County
will be allowed one contestant, and
there will be a $25 entry fee which
must be submitted with the entry.
Each contestant must be 16 years
of age, as of June 1, 1988, and be a
student in one of Starr County's
high schools A contestant must be
single and never have been mar-
ried at the time of the pageant
Contestants will make two ap-
pearances, first in sports attire and
then in evening gowns Judging will
be based on three aspects: poise,
personality, and beauty
Selections will be made by a
panel of three judges, all from
locations outside of Starr County.
An entry form provided by the
Rio Grande City Lions Club must
be submitted by each sponsor to
enter their contestant in the
pageant This form must be signed
by the contestants' parents and
guardian and sponsor
Entry forms must be filed by
Friday, Nov. 27 with the High
School office at the respective
schools No entries will be accepted
after the deadline date.
One photograph, preferably black
and white, must accompany the
entry form.
All contestants will be required
to attend a rehearsal at the Rio
Grande City High School Audi-
torium on Sunday, Nov 29, 1987 at
1 p m The contest will take place
Sunday, Dec 5 at 7:30 p.m at the
High School Auditorium

Vangie Anderson will serve as
treasurer; and Tissa Peterson is
the reporter.
James Peterson was elected to
serve a three year term as the
organization's representative on
the Starr County Youth Fair Board.
Other business discussed during
the meeting, with Vangie Anderson
presiding, included support of 4-H
projects and activities during the
year
The Little Miss Starr County
Pageant is scheduled for Saturday,
Nov. 21 at 7 p m. at the High School
Auditorium
This year s event will have three
divisions: Little Miss, ages 5-7;
Tiny Miss, 3 4; and B&by Miss, 1-2.
First, second, third, and fourth
place prizes will be awarded in
each division
Contestants will make one ap-
pearance in Sunday dress.
Judging will be based on three
factors: poise, personality, and
beauty.
Each school in Starr County will
be allowed one contestant, and
there w ill be a $15 entry fee which
must be submitted with the entry.
A sponsor must be an individual.

October 17, 1987 from 8 30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m
