Gridiron
Continued From Page 1
Throughout his high school years,
Martinez has excelled in track and
field competition.
The remainder of the backfield
candidates are junior A.J. Serratos ^ ^
(155 pounds), sophomore fullback ™ ™
Danny Benavides (190 pounds) and
senior Joel Anzaldua (165 pounds).
The receiving corps includes
senior Russell Clarke (5 feet, 11
inches, 155 pounds), and junior
Tony Garcia (5 feet, 6 inches, 130
pounds). Clarke was a starter for
much of the 1986 campaign, cat-
ching seven passes for 78 yards.
Other possibilities for the wide
receiver positions are senior Derric £ ^
Trevino, junior Benji Garza (137
pounds), and seniors Javier Garcia
(130 pounds), and Beto Garcia (135
pounds).
The Rattlers should be four-deep
at tight end, with seniors Hilario
Guerra (179 pounds), Curt

(177 pounds), and sophomoreRalph
Ramirez (160 pounds). Aaron
Chavarria (170 pounds) also may-
see action at the tight end position ^ £
In 1986, Guerra saw most of his
playing time on defense.
Four regulars from last year's
offensive line will be returning, led
by senior left tackle Roel Gomez
(209 pounds), and senior left guard
Aaron Garcia (202 pounds). Both
were named to the Honorable
Mention All-District team in 1986
Other returning starters are
senior center Romeo Garcia (202
pounds), and right tackle Juan 9 W
Galindo (214 pounds). Benny De-
Leon (208 pounds) will be given
serious consideration for the right
guard starting position.

the offensive line are tackles
Glafido Castillo (260 pounds) and
Jesse Solis (230 pounds), junior
center Mike Carreon (182 pounds),
and junior guard Naftali Garza
(219 pounds).
Defensive coordinator Jesse
Salinas said that "we'll run the
same split-six defense. We hope to
be strong against both the run and
the pass. Our front eight should be
the strongest area."
Junior middle linebacker Darrell
"Bubba" Earhart, Jr., (180
pounds) was named second team
All-District as a sophomore
Earhart led the squad with 106
tackles, trapped three running
backs behind the line of scrimmage
for 17 yards in losses, sacked the
quarterback twice, and recovered a
fumble.
Also returning is senior outside
linebacker Rafael Lopez (145
pounds). Lopez sacked opposing
quarterbacks five times for 33
yards in losses, and registered 65
tackles.
Other linebacker candidates will
be junior outside linebacker Reno
Gonzalez, and senior inside
linebackers Eddie Garcia and Joe
Garcia. Sophomores Richard
Ouellette and Eddie Medelez will
get a look at inside linebacker and
outside linebacker, respectively.
In the defensive line, junior
tackle Rene Ozuna (237 pounds)
was a part-time starter last year
He took over as a starter when
senior Mauricio Magallanes (225
pounds) sustained a broken leg in
the Laredo Nixon game. Salinas
said that Magallanes has prog-
ressed very well in hir recovery
from that injury.
Hector Gonzalez (200 pemds a
part-time starter at linebacker last
year, is being counted on to help at
defensive tackle this season.
Salinas said, "We hope to work
with four down linemen this year "
Junior Bobby Saenz (220 pounds)
and senior Javier Garcia (220 w
pounds) are defensive line
possibilities, as is junior Fermin
Serna (220pounds)
Salinas said that the Rattlers
seem to be thin in the secondary
this year Senior Juan Benitez (160
pounds) is a returning starter,
noted Salinas Senior Refugio
Barron (150 pounds) should see a
lot of playing time. Other defensive
back possibilities are Billy ^
Sepulveda and Joe Whatley W
Villegas commented about the
secondary, "We might have to
reshuffle things there, but we will
go with a two-platoon system,"
whereever possible.
The Rattlers will scrimmage San
Benito at home on Friday, Aug 21
On Thursday, Aug 27, Pharr-San
Juan-Alamo will travel to Rio to
scrimmage the Rattlers

be Brownsville Hanna (at home)
and Brownsville Pace (away)
before the Rattlers open their
district season at home against the
perennially powerful Edinburg
