The Herald-Steadfast And Reliable
The Rio Grande Herald management learned long ago
that you do not argue with skunks. Even in winning, you
come out with the smell.
We know that each week we distribute 4,200 copies of
the Herald, partially with a slightly changed name to
meet post office regulations. We reach an average of five
persons per copy, or 20,000 people.
We know that there are no more than 7,500 households
in Starr County, and that claims to the distribution of
10,000 copies of any paper are totally misleading and
meaningless.
The Herald has served Rio Grande C ity and the citizens
of Starr County since 1919-that was the year the late Pete
Diaz changed from a 10 yr. old Spanish language paper to
an English language newspaper to meet state legal
qualifications. We do not have to promise what we are
going to do--we have done our job for decades. We are a
newspaper of record: we record weekly history. We
intend to continue in this manner, because this is what
our job is, this is why we are covered by the First
Amendment, this is our responsibility.
We are connected with no other business in Rio Grande
City or Starr County. We depend upon the good will of
Starr County citizens and our advertisers. In short, we
are the publishers of a good weekly newspaper and are
proud of it. We do not need a self-serving certification,
which means nothing, to prove it.
We have EARNED our place in Starr County.
