F arewell Dinner

The Sisters of Mercy, who have
served Immaculate Conception
School in Rio Grande City for over
60 years, were honored with a
farewell supper Sunday night at the
Knights of Columbus Hall.
Sister Mary DePorres, principal,
said, "Deep emotions are very
difficult to express. The eight years
I have spent in Rio have been very
happy years for me in many ways.
I'm deeply appreciative of the
people, and the spirit of unity that
prevails. This is what Christianity
is all about. Thank you for the
beautiful tribute of love."
ICS board member Romeo Lopez
said, "We recognize the harvest of
excellence from the students at
ICS. We as a community are
thankful that the sisters gave their
lives to teaching." Outgoing Parent
Teacher Organization President
Sonja Smith said, "Our children
are very appreciative of what the
sisters have done."
All four of the departing sis-
ters-Sister DePorres, Sister Miriam
Teresa, Sister Mary Davila, and
Sister Mary Ethelreda, were pres-
ented with plaques. Outgoing
members of the ICS School Board
and the PTO board were presented
plaques for their help to the school,
as were other PTO members who
were commended as giving out-
standing service to the school.
Dr. Roberto S. Margo, the
incoming ICS board president,
said, "Without the Knights of
Columbus, we (the school) could
not have existed." He praised
Sonja Smith by saying, "She really
hustled the past two years."
Both the departing sisters and
citizens strongly supportive of the
school expressed optijjiism about

Mrs Felipe Ramon then pro-
ceeded with the installation of new
officers, a solemn and symbolic
ceremony. She recited a poem by
Alice Mortenon on "the warmth
and loveliness of spring when
flowers spring forth reminding us
of the beauty of nature- a gift of
art." And before her were flowers
of different colors representing "a
little imaginary garden," each
flower in a separate vase sym-
bolizing the virtues that would help
the new officers fulfill their duties
successfully.
Mrs. W.T. Guerra, the new
director, received the gold rose, a
symbol of leadership. She was
advised she would be the torch-
bearer who would inspire members
to seek greater knowledge and
understanding of our neighboring
countries in order to strengthen the
ties of friendship.
At this time, the new director
was pinned the President's pin at
the request of her mother-in-law,
Mrs. Maxine Guerra, who had
received it twenty years previously
when she had served as director of
the Table.
The red rose which symbolizes
courage, self-reliance, determina-
tion, and boldness went to the
associate director, Mrs. H
McAlpine. who will bear the torch
for her director whenever
circumstances call for.
Mrs. James Shaffer received the
white rose, representing purity,
symbolizing that she will perform
her duty conscientiously and accu-
rately. The yellow rose, which
symbolizes service, was handed to
Miss Celia Guerrero, corresponding
secretary. Yellow represents
alertness and attentiveness to ail
matters which require letter writ-
ing concerning club activities.
Mrs Alfredo Leal, the new
treasurer, received the blue flower
which symbolizes honor and integ-
rity, two virtues as indispensable
as accuracy in all monies received
and disbursed.
Mrs. Guadalupe Trevino, histori
an, received the lavender flower
which is symbolic of the loyalty
and devotion required toward the
Pan-American Alliance and to the
Table. Her duty will be to keep all
historicaj events pertaining to the
organization.
Mrs. Anacleto Salinas, custodian,
received the pink flower as a
symbol of trust as she guards with
zeal the property of this organiza-
tion. Mrs. Silvestre Gonzalez,
parliamentarian, received the pink
and purple flowers as a symbol of
guidance and direction in keeping
the club in order and in balance
with good counsel.
In closing, Mrs. Ramon com-
mended the Pan American
member as the best representative
of the American woman because
she appreciates the culture of the
United States as well as that of the
other Americas.
Mrs. S. Gonzalez proceeded to
summarize the highlights of the
activities in which the Table
participated and which reflected
her leadership and devotion to the
Table and the Alliance. She
thanked members and committees
for their cooperation and expressed
her sympathy for the loss of three
