A dozen students completed a
year of training as Starr County
Memorial Hospital Licensed Voca-
tional Nurses in graduation cere-
monies at the First Baptist Church
Friday night.
Hospital Administrator Thalia
Munoz said that this was the third
class to complete LVN school. She
said that in the future, these
classes will be conducted at the
hospital under the auspices of
Laredo Jr. College. She said the
students had worked hard, and
received much support from all
parties involved with the school.
The 12 graduates are: Martin
Carrion. Sr.; Martin Carrion, Jr .
Robert Wilson, Norma Benavides:
Julio Garza; Maricela L. Con-
treras; Alma Preza; Eva Davila;
Olivia Montalvo; Thelma Serna;
Melba Pena; and Trinidad Bazan.
Munoz noted several prominent
achievements of the class. She said

that Martin Carrion, Sr., had
received the highest grade com-
bined for theory and clinical work
Robert Wilson received the highest
grade for theory work alone, and
Eva Davila and Norma Benavides
tied for the highest marks in
clinical work.
Jacinto Juarez, dean of Occupa
tional and Vocational Education at
Laredo Jr. College, gave the main
address. He said, "You had the
best instruction possible. You will
not find another profession as
rewarding or humanizing as the
one you have selected."
He said that goal setting is most
important, along with persistence.
Juarez added, "The graduates in
our nursing programs get the best
jobs...You can work almost any
where and the salaries will be
competitive."
Juarez said that the health care
industry must adjust to change,
with productivity now as important
as service. The technological revo-
lution, he said, means major
changes for hospitals. He added,
"The patien' remains the key actor
in the whole health care process."
Eva Davila, the class President
presented a gift from the class to
Mrs Diane Schiefelbein. the
director of the LVN School. Miss
Melissa Garza, an LVN graduate of
1982, then sang a song on behalf of
the class. Mrs. Schiefelbein then
awarded diplomas to the 12 stu
dents and Mrs. Helen V. Shuford,
Director of Nurses, presented

After a brunch, Mrs. Lundy
Hooten, president,opened the meet-
ing with prayer. She read from the
Calendar of Prayers for special
missionaries whose birthdays and
special needs were listed and had
prayer for them. She stated that
since the new years program
"Committed to Mission" we need
to know the needs fo those in our
prayer calendar"
Mrs. Warren, first vice president,
passed out the new year books
which she had compiled. She
reminded the group about the Arts
Craft Fair at St. Marks United
Methodist Church in McAllen, at
which time we are to furnish
cookies.
Mrs. Robert Peterson, treasurer,
reported that the Circle will donate
$1,000.00 to the Church Treasurer
for the Building Fund of the
Church. This was made from the
different projects of the Circle and
from pledges.
Mrs. Frank L. Anderson, pro-
gram chairman for the day,
presented the program with the
help of Mrs. Kenny Anderson and
Mrs. Edwin La Grange, entitled
"Strangers, Immigrants-Angels
Unawares?" She reminded the
that immigrants can be
in nursing homes who are
group
people
away from their own homes and
sometimes their families; strang-
ers who pass through out towns;
and new people coming into our
community.
New members welcomed into the
organization were Mrs. Edwards
Ramirez, Mrs. Belia Garza and
Mrs. Consuela Morales.

promoted in the U.S. Army to the
rank of sergeant
Martinez is a tactical field wire
specialist in Neu Ulm, West
Germany, with the 55th Mainte
nance Battalion
His wife, Ninza, is the daughter
of Violia Perez of Rural Route 1 in
Rio Grande City Martinez is a 1970
graduate of Lockney Hi£k$chool.
