Cub Scouts Receive
Award
Den 1, Pack 93 of the Rio Grande
City Cub Scouts received a certifi-
cate of award at the Paisano
District Banquet held recently in
McAllen.
The award, accepted by Den
Leader Tissa Peterson, was the
Summertime Pack Award given to
packs who fulfill Summertime
meeting and activity requirements.
Den 1 members Jaime Garza,
Jerry Guerra, JcVe Margo,
Michael Margo, Eric Mills, 0,V/
Peterson, Abel Ariel Porras, and
Carlo6 Vela received a den certifi-
cate and will receive individual
pins for their accomplishments.
The Cub Scouters attend Cub Day
Camp in McAllen for a week in
June; met in July to make and

couch-Elsa High School in 1976, and
graduated from Pan American
University in 1981 with a Bachelor
of Science degree in Medical
Technology. He is also currently
employed at Rio Grande Regional
Hospital and is active in the U.S.
Marine Reserve.
Pan American University President Miguel Nevarez A.
Nevarez was one of nine Hispanic educators honored by
President Reagan in ceremonies at the White House
Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe B Turner of
Rio Grande City celebrated their
50th wedding anniversary Tuesday.
The Turners were honored Sun-
day at a covered-dish iuncheon at
First Baptist Church, where they
have been members for many
years. They received several gifts
and a card signed by most
members of the church.
Mrs. Ruby Turner said, "It's
been a good fifty years, and the
years have been very happy at this
church. She added, "We really
appreciate our good and loyal
friends in Rio Grande City." Both
Turners expressed admiration of
the friendly people here.
The couple met at the home of
Turner's sister. They were married
in Beaumont on Sept. 18, 1934 and
renewed their vows at First Baptist
Church five years ago.
The Turners have two sons, and
one daughter. Frances, works as a
security guard in Kelso,
Washington. Joey Jr. works as a
TV technician for "Hopps TV" in
San Antonio.
Their daughter, Ruby Mae, lives
in Dayton, Tennessee and works as
a nurse. The Turners have 10
grandchildren and three great-
grandchildren.
Joe Turner was born in
Opeloosas, Louisiana on Oct. 11,
1909, but was raised in Lake
Charles. He joined the Navy at age
15 and spent almost four years at
sea, most of that time as a
quartermaster
He went to work for Gulf as a .

Women in Missions" was the theme
of the program Thursday, Sept. 13
of the Ruth Adella Circle of St
John Methodist Church at the home
of Mrs. Boone La Grange
Special guests attended from

City, First United Methodist
Church of Rio Grande City, First
United Methodist Church of Pharr,
and First United Methodist Church
of Mission.
After a "covered dish luncheon"
the meeting was opened vby the
president, Mrs Frank L Anderson
After introduction of guests, Mrs
Betty Bundy of Mission presented a
program entitled "Fill My Cup,
Lord " Rev Lundy Hooten, pastor
of the church, closed the meeting
with the group reciting the Lord's
Prayer.

Turners Celebrate •
50th Anniversary
Houston, before serving as a
quartermaster aboard merchant
ships in the late 1920's and early
1930's.
Ruby Turner was born in Hayes,
Louisiana, which is located
southeast of Lake Charles. She
graduated from Bell City High
School near Hayes in May 1934.
Mrs. Turner has worked as a
teacher's aide since 1966 and is
currently a remedial reading
teacher's aide at Ringgold Elemen-
tary. She has been involved with
remedial reading since 1973
The Turners moved around South
Texas frequently with Turner
working as a pumper near towns
like George West, Mathis, Freer
and Benavides. Mrs. Turner said
they wound up moving 42 times in
nine years.
In the mid-1940's they moved to
San Isidro and lived there for 12
years Turner spent most of that
time working for Conoco as a
pumper He wound up working for
Conoco for 20 years, retiring in
1969
Ruby Turner said, "We had a lot
of happy years in San Isidro."
They are charter members of First
Baptist Church in San Isidro, which
was organized in 1950 and began
meeting in the bleachers at the
high school.
The Turners moved to Rincon in
1955 and moved to Rio Grande City
in 1957. They reunited with First
Baptist that same year. They had
been members in the late 1940's
driving from San Isidro and
attending services.

Eleanor Payne, and Jessie Warren
Mrs Boone La Grange, president
of McAllen District, presided dur-
ing the meeting, which was entitled
"God is Everywhere." During the
morning session Zelma de la Garza
of the Good Neighbor Settlement
House of Brownsville spoke to the
group telling of needs of food for
the pantry, and used clothing.
Dan Palmer, president of the
Camp Thicket Board, invited all to
attend the camp and make use of
it. He stated that the Methodist
camp is over 30 years old
Rev Jeanne Devine, Assistant
Pastor of First United Methodist
Church of Brownsville, spoke on
"God is Working Through Inspira-
tion," urging the group to re-
member who God really is She
stated that remember appears over
400 times in the Old Testament.
