Score Well In Edinburg
Lori Lyn Peterson and Telca Caren
Porras of Rio Grande City were honored
last weekend at an awards ceremony held
at Trinity College in San Antonio. Telca
Caren is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs
Santos Porras, Jr., and Lori is the
daughter of Mr and Mrs James Peterson.
They are students at Ringgold Junior High
School
Texas seventh graders in Duke Universi-
ty's fourth annual search for mathemati
cally and verbally gifted students were
honored at the ceremonies, held in San
Antonio on June 8 and at Southern
Methodist University on June 9.
The students invited to the ceremony
had obtained scores on at least on of three
sections of the Scholastic Aptitude Test
(SAT) which were equal to or greater than
the average score obtained by college-
bound high school students. These very
capable seventh graders or 12-year-olds
took the college-level SAT as participants
in Duke's Talent Identification Program
(TIP).
Also taking part in the Talent Identifica-
tion Program from Ringgold Junior High
School and scoring very high was Dina
Lopez, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Romeo
Lopez of Rio Grande City.
"TIP was initiated in 1980 to identify
bright young students, to help develop
their special abilities, and to direct them
toward special academic programs for the
gifted and talented. The 1984 Talent
Search involved programs for the gifted
and talented. The 1984 Talent Search
involved more than 29,000 studeri . and
covered 16 of the Southern southwestern
and rnidwestern United States and is the
largest search of its type in the country,"
said Dr. Robert Sawyer. Director of the
