Juanita "Bibi" Gonzalez, daughter of
Yolanda Cardenas of Rio Grande City, will
lie taking a trip to Hawaii as a fifteenth
birthday gift of her Uncle, Ray Cardenas of
Westminister, California. Accompanying
Bibi will be her Aunt, Mary Cardenas, and
cousin Cindy. They will depart in late May
when school is out.
The Indies Auxiliary of the Rio Grande
City Volunteer Fire Department will have
their meeting on Friday, May 15, at 7:30
p.m. at the Fire Station. Anyone who is
interested in attending the meeting and
wants to be a volunteer will be welcome,
according to Auxiliary President Lupita
Guzman.
Xi Kappa Iota Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi
celebrated Founder's Day April 30 as guests
of Alpha Sigma Phi and Roma at the
Waldorf Restaurant in Miguel Aleman.
Awards were presented to Mrs. Silvestre
Gonzalez, Girl of the Year; Mrs. Guadalupe
I'ena, Sweethe«it; and Mrs. Joe Hinojosa,
Mrs. Silvestre Gonzalez, Mrs. Roel
Ramirez, and Mrs. Hector Gonzalez,
Perfect Attendance. Pins were presented to
the outgoing officers, and new officers for
1981-82 were introduced. They are Mrs.
Guadalupe Pena, president; Mrs. Hector
Gonzalez, vice-president; Mrs. Lino
Canales, corresponding secretary; Mrs.
Apolonio Pena, recording secretary; Mrs.
Silvestre Gonzalez, treasurer; and Mrs.
Koel Ramirez, extension officer.
Members of Xi Kappa Iota met at the
home of Mrs. Ninfa Saenz on May 4. After
reciting the opening ritual, President Alma
Gloria Gonzalez welcomed new member
Lucy Cantu. Mrs Diana Pena, scholarship
committee chairperson, announced that the
committee would be meeting to select the
two recipients of the $100 scholarships to be
awarded to Rio Grande City High School
seniors. Mrs. Gonzalez reported that one
$100 scholarship would also be awarded to a
Roma High School senior. Plans to attend
the Beta Sigma Phi State Convention to be
held in McAllen June 26-28 were discussed,
with the deadline for sending in the
registration fee set for May 24. Mrs. Alma
Gloria Gonzalez presented the program on
the chapter's accomplishments during the
past year. She emphasized that the chapter
had contributed to the community by
donating to the Rio Grande City Fire
Department and Special Olympics,
awarding a nursing scholarships to the
Starr County Memorial Hospital LVN
Program, and by awarding three $100
scholarships to deserving seniors. All
members recited the closing ritual and the
meeting was followed by a delicious meal
served by the hostess.
The Rio Grande City Pizza Hut gave
complimentary ribbons on Mother's Day,
with the ribbons being donated ty City Class
Shop. All mothers were treated to a free
buffet. Free music was enjoyed by the
mothers and their families from 12 noon to 7
p.m., all on behalf of Noe Rodriguez and the
Pizza Hut crew. Over 400 mothers attended.
Juan Saenz, a sophomore at Texas A&I
University in Kingsville, has been selected
reporter of the University's Aggie Club for
1981-82. Saenz is from Rio Grande City. Dr.
James Arnold and Dr. David Crenshaw.
Texas A&I College of Agriculture faculty
members, are advisers for the student
group.
A Memorial Day Weekend Rodeo is being
planned by the Starr County 4-H Council.
The rodeo will be held at La Sagunada
Ranch on Sunday, May 24, at 2:00 p.m. 4-
H'ers and 4-H Adult leaders and parents
are encouraged to help out in this effort to
benefit all the 4-H clubs. Youth events, such
as the goat tie, greased pig, barrel rescue,
cow chip toss, and calf scramble are being
planned.
Seven Texas A&I University music
students were featured in a student musical
recital Thursday, May 7, in the recital hall
of the Frank C. Smith Fine Arts Center.
Performing students included Rene
Villarreal, Rio Grande City freshman,
marimba.
Texas A&I University's La Compania de
Teatro Bilingue will begin a 7-performance,
six-week tour in Mexico May 22, with a
majority of their performances scheduled
for Mexico City. The annual summer tour is
offered in connection with Texas A&I Center
for Continuing Education courses. Mem-
bers of the troupe include Jose Rodriguez,
San Isidro graduate student. Dr. Joseph
Rosenberg directs the troupe.
