One has been lost to us, one who was loved
and was known for her dedication. She died
at Starr County Memorial Hospital, a place
where she spent many, many hours in
^ volunteer service, where she expressed a
w great love for the place and for the people.
As Carlyle wrote, "Give us, oh, give us, the
(woman) who sings at (her) work1 (She)
will do more in the same time,—(she) will
do it better,—! she) will persevere longer.
One is scarcely sensible of fatigue whilst
(she) marches to music. The very stars are
said to make harmony as they revolve in
their spheres. Wondrous is the strength of
cheerfulness, altogether past calculation in
its powers of endurance. Efforts, to be
l>ei-manently useful, must be uniformly
9 joyous, a spirit all sunshine, graceful from
very gladness, beautiful because bright."
Ella Mae Chirstesson will be missed.
The Woodmen of the World, Rosas del
Valle Grove no. 6052 are inviting active and
inactive members to their annual Christmas

The Glorious Fall
Of The Year
Bv Marietta Fullc
complishments, similar
income or job appear less
important to friends than
personal traits. the
specialist continues
Friendship varies over the
stages of the life cycle.
Young children enjoy other
family members, teenagers
like more friends and less
family, and older adults
enjoy immediate family, kin
and long-time friends.
"Friendships provide the
strongest buffer to
loneliness. "When friends
enjoy a relationship that is
free, trusting and worth
keeping, they develop a
sense of self-worth in each
other," Miss Taylor adds.
We bask in the glories of the heavenlies—
the billowy clouds and bright blue skies
throughout the day and the innumerable
stars, the bright Harvest moon, and other
glories at night. The crisp air makes us
breathe more deeply as we survey God's
splendor. We see the tranquil blue lakes, the
majesty of the purple mountains in the
distance, the colorful wildflowers in the
meadows, and other things of beauty. The
trees have been painted into their various
hues.
We think of Joyce Kilmer who wrote:
"Poemsare made by fools like me; but only
God can make a tree." And we realize this
especially in THE GLORIOUS FALL OF
THE YEAR1 The red of the Maple, Black
Gum, Dogwood, and Sumac; the yellow of
the Poplar, Aspen, Sweet Gum and Maple;
the orange and brown of the Oak and Maple;
the purple of the Sweet Gum; and the
evergreens which stay green throughout the
year-all blend their colors into a beautiful
and breath-taking landscape.
We engage in the many activities of thu,
Fall of the year which are hickory or walnut
hunting, hiking through the woods with the
leaves crunching under our feet, fishing on
the lake, taking that last golfing fling,
driving through scenic areas, etc.
When we see the creation of God in THE
GI>ORIOUS FALL OF THE YEAR, we
remember the following passages from
God's book—the Holy Bible which say:
"The heavens declare the glory of God, and
the firmament sheweth His handiwork. (Ps.
19:1) "When I consider Thy heavens, the
work of Thy fingers, the moon and the stars,
which Thou hast ordained, What is man that
thou art mindful of him?" (Ps. 8:3) And
finally, we have the passage: "For the
invisible things of Him (God) from the
creation of the world are clearly seen being
understood by the things that are made,
even His eternal power and Godhead; so
that thev are without excuse." (Rom. 1:20)
Seeing His creations in THE GLORIOUS
FALL OF THE YEAR, there is no excuse
for not knowing that God exists. And if we
believe that there is a God, should we not
also believe in Jesus Christ and be saved
from our sins? "For God sent not His Son
into the world to condemn the world (of its
sins); but that the world (of sinners)
through Him (Jesus ) might be saved."
(John 3:17) And,"If we say that we have no
sin, we deceive'ourselves and the truth is not
in us. (I John 1:8) Yes, Jesus died for the
entire world of sinners!
And there is a harvest, too, in THE
GLORIOUS FALL OF THE YEAR. Mounds
of pumpkins, apples, turnips, decorative
ears of corn, all colors and sizes of
decorative squashes as well as edible ones,
apple cider, sorgum molasses, and many
other things are at the wayside stands along
the roads.
There is a harvest time, too, in God's
plans. The Jesus said to His disciples, "The
harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers
are few." (St. Matt. 9:37) Since salvation
comes only from hearing and reading the
Words of the Bible I Rom. 10:17); see that
the Word of God gets to others in any way
that you can. And finally, pray. "Pray ye
therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He
will send forth labourers into His harvest."
(St. Matt. 9:38)
Roma
Headstart To
Raffle Quilts
A quilt raffle as a money raising project
was one of the topics of discussion October
22 during the second monthly meeting of the
Roma Headstart Program.
Mrs. A.C. Alvarez opened the meeting by
welcoming the parents. She introduced the
guest speaker, Mrs. Iliana Jordan, the
speech therapist for the Headstart
Program.
Mrs. Atnada Gomez, Parent president,
then took over. Mrs, Dora Alaniz, parent
secretary, read the minutes of the previous
meeting.
Topics for discussion were many but the
most important was money-raising
projects. It was decided by the parents that
they would undertake a "quilt raffle" as
their first project. The guilt was donated by
Mrs. Alba Martinez, one of the parents
present.
In other matter, six parents were named
to attend the Headstart Meeting in McAllen
Oct. 29.
Refreshments were served at the end of
the business meeting. Mrs. Gomez thanked
all present for their participation.

Select Bulls
On Performance
In selecting a herd bull, the producer
should search for one with a high weaning
weight that hopefully will be transmitted to
offspring.
Since the weaning weight trait is about 30
percent heritable, this represents the
estimated genetic difference that can be
transmitted to offspring, says David San-
defer, county agent with the Texas
Agricultural Extension Service, Texas A&M
University System. Of course, each parent
transmits only half of his genes to off
spring. Therefore, a bull with a weaning
weight of 100 pounds more than another bull
would be expected to produce 15 additional
pounds per calf.
Even though this increase seems small,
considerable herd and economical im-
provement can be realized from the
weaning weight trait, notes Sandefer.
For instance, the extra 15 pounds from a
better performing bull on a 40-head herd can
make a lot of difference, especially when the
bull is kept four years or more. With 60-eent
calves, this can add up to $3C0 more per year
or $1,440 over four years.
Also, many producers are beginning to
keep their cattle after weaning and are
sending them to commercial . foodlots.
Improved bull performance should mean
more dollars per head when feeding cattle to
slaughter weight, explains Sandefer.
