People And Places
A couple who remember
Fort Ringgold at its best
made a pilgrimage ;.his week
to visit the foft, wruch was
the place of their marriage
and their first home
together.
Col. (ret.) William H.
Niland and his wife Betty
were amazed to find the Lee
House, their "honeymoon
cottage", still standing.
The couple was wed in
Fort Ringgold on- April 4,
1942 in a building that was
then the "Recreation Hall."
They moved into the Lee
House on the hill in the fort
with little more than a few
Indian rugs and a lamp to
their name. Their first home
was furnished with "GI"
furniture, including an old
"mourner's bench" in the
sitting room. They enjoyed
reminiscing about the rooms
as they used to be and
noticed that modifications
had been made in the house,
such as a "fancy" shower
which they had not had at
that earlier time and the
enclosing of a porch on
which they had been
photographed.
Looking out across the
fort, they recalled the "bar-
racks," ' now classrooms:
the "officer's quarters",
now school offices; the "O"
Club; and other buildings
used by the fort in its prime.
Of the Lee House, they
added that it was not built
here but at a camp way down
the river. "It was pulled up
here to Ft. Ringgold by
horses," recalled Col.
Niland. "It was placed on
rollers, which had to be
moved from the back to the
front as the house rolled
along toward its
destination." The couple
said it was a "beautiful
house at one time" and that
it is "absolutely fantastic"
By Tissa
that it is still here.
During his stay here from
1941 through 1943, Col.
Niland commanded "F"
Troop of the 124 Cavalry.
Now retired and living in El
Paso, "Bill" and "Betty"
made the trip down the
border to see their early
home and to recall fond
memories of their days here.
In a stop at Ft. D.A.
Russell in Marfa, they found
that fort all torn down. "You
all really have something
unusual to be proud of
here," said the Nilands of
Fort Ringgold and its
preserved buildings.
Leonor Elizondo Loved In Grulla
Leonor
Elizondo
She never held the title of
Citrus Queen or Miss
America, but in the minds of
many, Leonorcita is truly an
outstanding woman. Leonor
Elizondo, a long-time
resident of Grulla is still a
very active and enthusiastic
senior citizen of 74 years.
"Tia Leonor" was born,
reared and married in
Grulla. She has always been
and still is an active member
in her church. She has been
teaching doctrina", the
oasic truths of the Catholic
faith.,, for 23 years. Even
though she lives her faith,
she comes faithfully every
Tuesday morning to prepare
her lesson for 24 first
graders. She closes her
preparation with, "With
God's help, I hope I can do
it." She is doing it.
She has been a
housekeeper for Holy
Family Parish priests since
1967 and faithfully visits the
sick and elderly in Grulla.
Leonorcita is a happy
woman, a woman filled with
concern and love for the
people in her community.

treatment or information -
and have formed a statewide
association to help solve
these problems," said
Fredrick.
Current concerns of the
Association include: com-
munity mental health center
funding; mental health
coverage in national health
insurance: child care
licensing; patient's rights
and the impact of dein-
stitutionalization.
The Association utilizes a
variety of information and
education services in order
to eliminate misconceptions,
educate the general public
about symptoms and en-
courage early detection and
treatment of mental illness.
Since the Mental Health
Association in Texas is a
non-profit volunteer agency,
it must rely on private
contributions to continue
working to promote mental
health.

Supreme in war, in council, and in peace. Valiant
without ambition, discreet without fear, Confident
without presumption. In disaster, calm; in suc-
cess, moderate; in all, himself. The hero, the
patroit, the Christian. The father of nations, the
friend of mankind, Who, when he had won all,
renounced all, And sought in the bosom of his
family and of nature, retirement, And in the hope
of religion, immortality."
