unselor at the Texas State
Technical Institute (TSTI)
at Harlingen, was the
ARE YOU A HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUT?
HEP. the High School Equivalency Program for
migrant and seasonalfarmworker youth between
the ages of 17 and 24, may be the answer for
you. The program provides an opportunity for
young people who have dropped out of school to
earn a high school equivalency certificate and
improve their chances of getting a better job. or
continuing their education.

Barrera, a dynamic and
knowledgeable personality,
shared with the program
participants some of his
views relative to the im-
portant aspects of life. His
presentation emphasized the
development of a strong
foundation early in life
which in his opinion, is
essential in a healthy
lifestyle.
He focused on the im-
portance of education, job
security, mutual respect in
the family unit, consistency
and punctuality at work and
other characteristics
essential in the development
of a strong foundation in life.
Barrera also made a brief
presentation on the different
training fields available at
T . S.T. I. Financial
assistance, work study
programs as well as the
general enrollment
procedures, were also ex-
plained.
The YCCIP is a program
funded by the office of
Farmworker Programs of
the Department of Labor. It
is intended to provide skills
training experience to forty
young adults 1G-19 years of
age who dropped out of
school and who live within
the boundaries of Starr and
Zapata counties.
Besides the skills training
experience, G.IJ.D. classes
will also be provided so that
interested participants may
pursue completion of their
High School education.
Other activities that will
also be part of the program
include, informative group
sessions with topics dealing
with education, health,
social services, safety, first
aid and others.
