Science Club Tours Monterrey
Thirty-two students and
twelve adults participated in
a cultural and science
enrichment field trip to
Monterrey, Mexico, ac-
cording to R. C. Salinas, Jr.,
principal of Ringgold Junior
High School.
The trip, taken Wed-
nesday, March 22, saw the
group leave Miguel Aleman
early that morning. Upon
arrival in Monterrey, they
visited the Basilica of El
Roble and the Governor's
Palace in the downtown
area.
The focus of the trip was a
classroom lecture and
laboratory conducted by
Alfonso Solis, science in-
structor at the Junior High,
at Huasteca Canyon. The
young scientists explored,
collected specimens, and
worked several experiments
while there. Highlighting the
trip was a visit to Garcia
Caves, but the rush of
holiday visitors made it
impossible to visit the caves,
The ever-entertaining Mr.
Solis nonetheless conducted
another science lecture and
laboratory by the foothills of
the famous caves.
That evening, the group
divided itself into small
groups for a tour of the
Cathedral and La Plaza
Zanageza. Tired, exhausted,
but quite fulfilled, the group
arrived in Rio Grande City
at eleven that same night.
Funds for the trip were
raised by the Science Club,
directed bv Alfonso Solis.

Each pack of cigarettes
costs the smoker less than a

cost of smoking to society_as
well as to smokers and their
families- is staggering.
In this country alone,
estimates of the health costs
associated with smoking are
over a $5 billion a year.
Every year.
This mind-boggling figure
is based on costs of providing

also includes income lost
because of illness. Smokers,
for example, are sick in bed
88 million more days each
year than are nonsmokers.
The figure includes
projections of future income
lost because of premature
death. Every year 300,000
Americans die prematurely
from the effects of cigarette
smoking. Also contained in
the $5 billion total is an
estimate of the monetary
value of property loss in
fires caused by smoking.
What the gargantuan
figure does not-and cannot-

effects on their families and

County Extension Agent.

Never use bleach on wool,
mohair or silk, the agent
warns.
For best results in the

Do not pour bleach

cause fabric damage, she
adds.
A solution of one-half to

Shopping for
air conditioning?
High EER means
more efficiency.
High EER: that's the requirement to keep in mind if you plan to
invest in air conditioning this summer.
EER fortunately, isn t as mysterious as it may sound EER stands
for Energy Efficiency Ratio, and is simply a measurement of
cooling delivered for energy
consumed
In air conditioning, the
higher the EER number
on the system you
choose, the more ef-
ficiently it operates,
And that means sav-
ings for you on elec-
tric bills
Air conditioners with
the same cooling
capacity may vary
greatly in their effi-
ciency, with some
using more electric-
ity than others to
achieve the same
level of cooling By
comparing EER numbers, you can determine which unit will do the
most efficient job
Although the air conditioner with the highest EER may cost more
initially it is a better long-range investment, since you will be able
to run it with fewer kilowatt hours of electricity Look for a high EER
number—preferably 8 or more—when you buy an air conditioner
It's an important way to use energy wisely
