Basketball season is well
under way at Rio Grande
City High School. Last
Tuesday the Rattlers .ell to
PSJA at Pharr with a tight
score of 56-53. Javier
Fuentes and Bobby Garcia
were top scorers with 25 and
19 points scored by these
cagers.
Rio led at halftime of the
fast-paced game, but the
Bears came back a little
stronger in the second half.
The JV lost their game that
night by only two points, 51-
49.
Last Friday in a game
played against Hanna in
Brownsville, the Rattlers
won by a score of 66-61.
Javier and Bobby once again
led the scoring with sixteen
points. The Rattlers had a
halftime lead of 34-33 in the
hard-fought non district
gam
The Rio Girls Basketball
team played La Joya last
week with a score of 31-6,
and they play La Joya again
this week. The girls are
shaping up their first season.
The Student Council
distributed its yearly
Thanksgiving baskets last
Wednesday. All the clubs in
school donated baskets. The
baskets were all very nice,'
and a special thanks to the
Junior class for donating the
biggest basket.
This Thursday night the
Student Council will spon-
sor the Little Miss Starr
County Pageant. Rio High
School clubs and or classes
are being urged to sponsor
the girls in the contest.
Everyone is invited to attend
the pageant scheduled to be
held in the Rio High
Auditorium at 7:00 p.m.
The Junior Class is
planning to sponsor a talent
show soon, and all those
interested in participating
should contact Grade Perez.
A free dance is also being
planned by the Student
Council, with the date to be
announced soon. Everyone
be on the lookout and plan to
attend and have fun.
An excellent program was
sponsored by the Student
Council on Friday,
November 11, in observance
of Veterans Day. The
ceremony, held at the school
auditorium at 8:30. a.m. was
dedicated to veterans of all
wars, with faculty veterans
being presented to everyone
present.
First Petty Officer Rick
Cavazos from I .a Sara, Navy
Recruiter at Pharr, was
guest speaker for the oc-
casion. He spoke on the unity
of the military service
branches and how this unity
made the country strong
during war while fighting
preserve peace. Mistress of
Ceremonies for the program
was Yvonne J. Trevino, and
Presentation of the Colors
was made by the FFA
Chapter, presented by
Carmela Saenz and I^ainar
Rodriguez. V a n g i e
Villarreal, student council
member, led the invocation.
"The Star-Spangled
Banner; was played by the
Rio High School Band, and
the pledge of allegiance was
led by Romelia Garcia,
honorary member of the
student council. Junior Class
President Gonzalo Venecia
gave the welcome, and Rosie
Villarreal, student council
secretary, gave a narration
on Veterans Day.
A highlight of the program
was the playing of tapes by
band students Rudy Barrera
and Miguel Perez in honor of
the Unknown Soldier and all
who died for their country.
Dalia Diaz led the
Benediction.

THANKSGIVING BASKETS—The Student Council
of Rio Grande City High School continued its annual
tradition of giving baskets of food this Thanksgiving.
Various families in the area received the baskets of
food, given by all the classes and clubs of Rio Grande
City High School. The Junior Class donated the largest
basket.
SURPRISE PARTY—I-ast Monday at a regular
meeting of the Student Council of Rio Grande City High
School, a surprise party was held for sponsor Benito
Saenz. All the members joined in singing "Happy
Birthday" and wished him well. The honoree was
presented with a cake bearing the symbol of the
University of Texas, as he is such a big Longhorn fan.
He was also given a gift, and refreshments followed.
