Thursday is Thanksgiving! This special holiday is celebrated
every year in both the United States and Canada. On this day,
people give thanks with feasting and prayer for the blessings they . * •
have received during the year. The Pilgrims began the
Thanksgiving tradition with harvest festivals, or days for thanking
God for plentiful crops. For this reason, the holiday still takes place
in the late fall, after the crops have been gathered. For thousands
of years, people in many lands have held harvest festivals. The
American Thanksgiving Day probably grew out of the harvest
home celebrations of England.
This prayer of Thanksgiving printed by "Dear Abby " reminds us
of the many blessings we have harvested besides crops and makes
us mindful of those whose harvest was not so plentiful. "Oh,
heavenly Father, we thank Thee for food and remember the
hungry. We thank Thee for health, and remember the sick. We
thank Thee for friends, and remember the friendless We thank
Thee for freedom, and remember the enslaved. May these
remembrances stir us to service, that Thy gifts to us may be used - .
for others. Amen." Have a happy day . Share it with your family or
someone you love!
Mrs. Effie Purcell is thankful to be home with her family for the
holidays. She also gives thanks to all her many friends for their
prayers, cards, visits, gifts, and other kindnesses to her during her
stay at Starr County Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Piu-cell is especially
grateful to Dr. Ramirez and the staff there for their treatment of
her.
A Community Thanksgiving Service is being planned for this
Wednesday night, November 26. It will be held at the Immaculate
Conception Church, and all the local churches will be taking part in
the special service. Everyone is urged to attend.
Put an extra fun "kick" in your holidays by going to the kicker
dance at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Friday night The
Parent-Teacher Organization of the Immaculate Conception
Church is sponsoring the dance, which will feature the music of the
Country Roland band. Dancing will be from 8 until 12 and tickets
may be bought for $3.00 per person.
