Quarantine
Lifted In Valley
iuo (iK.wni cm' tlx as
ROMA. TLX AS N I
Quarantines imposed during
June on a portion of Pharr
because of an outbreak of exotic
Newcastle disease in one
backyard poultry flock have
been lifted by the Texas Animal
Health Commission and the
U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USI)A i.
Confirmation of the disease
was made by USIJA's Animal
and Plant Health Inspection
Service iAPHIS) on June 17.
The 28 chickens on the affected
premises in the Rio Grande
Valley have died or have been
destroyed and the owner will be
indemnified for his loss.
A cooperative state-federal
task force surveyed all poultry
flocks and pet birds in the ap-
proximately 4 square mile
quarantine area. No signs of
infection have been found,
indicating that the disease did
not spread from the infected
flock.
Exotic Newcastle disease is a
usually fatal virus disease of
poultry and other birds It poses
no hazard to consumers of
poultry meat and eggs.
This very dangerous disease
of poultry and birds is found in
Mexico and other countries.
USDA regulations bar the
importation of birds except
under the most stringent
requirements of quarantine and
testing. However, the disease
has been brought into the U.S.
on occasion by the illegal
movement of parrots and other
pet birds or accidentally on
contaminated shoes or clothing
of people visiting cock fights or
bird farms south of the border.
