Guerre Withdraws
Resignation; No
Reasons Given
George Guerra, business
manager and assistant
superintendent of schools
requested withdrawal of his
controversial resignation from
the school system. The matter
of the resignation was on the
minds of most of the citizenry
since the school board never
offically mentioned the facts
surrounding the then-alleged
resignation. Those voting to
allow the withdrawal of the
resignation were John Pope III,
and Robert Margo, After the
motion to release the
resignation was moved by
Charles La Grange and
seconded by .Javier Margo, it
passed.

Pope Jr. Appointed
To Bar Committee
AUSTIN-The Texas Supreme
Court has appointed John A.
Pope, Jr. of Rio Grande City as
a member of a State Bar of
Texas committee to aid the
Bar's screening process in
reviewing applicants for ad-
mission to the Bar.
He is charged with certifying
the eligibility and qualifications
of applicants for admission to
the Bar as part of a new
Supreme Court system of
assuring that all new lawyers
meet character and fitness
guidelines.
Each of the 17 State Bar
Districts has one district
committee, consisting of at
least 15 members from the
district, appointed by the Texas
Supreme Court with the
assistance of State Bar
president Lloyd Lochridge.
Adopted in February, this
new unified procedure replaces
the diverse screening processes
used by several dozen local bar
associations across the state.

NEW VALLEY MART SIGN -
It took three days and a great
deal of strength to raise the new
sign which officially renames
the Val-U-Mart, Valley Mart.
Pete Diaz Jr., the head of the
Valley Mart organization, had
promised a new sign a few
months ago. The move was
made in order to conform the
Rio Grande Store with the
Valley Mart chain located
throughout the valley area. The
sign is about lf>0 feet high and is
one of the largest signs anyone
will find in the county.

A representative from the
architectural firm of Ashly,
Garza, Humphries and
Associates explained the ser-
vices to be offered by his firm.
A discussion by board members
ensued regarding the con-
struction methods. It was
discussed whether their ar-
chitectural plans included
completing the various projects
piece-meal in accordance with
the selling of the bonds.
One of the board members
inquired as to whether there
will be permanent or periodic
inspections of the construction.
The architect did not know
whether the inspector of the
construction would be tem-
porary or permanent, but that
certainly there would be
"periodic inspections as
required." It is not known
whether the architectural fees
include the resident inspector
fee. The fee for the architects
will be fi.32^jf the cost.
Construction of the building,
especially in the schools to be
remodeled, will not be in-
terrupted by the construction.
The architect explained the
plumbing and other interior
remolding was not hazardous
and school not be interrupted
uneedlessly. The buildings are
scheduled to be completed
within six months. The matter
was tabled until more in-
formation for the board
becomes available. No decision
was reached in the hiring of
architects.
Again the matter of re-
assessment came before the
school board. The school board
has been at a standstill since no
motion had ever been made to
have any type of re-evaluation.
During the course of the
discussions, it was revealed
that the manner of assessing
values has been on bit and miss
with a great deal of guessing
involved. "How do you arrive at
an evaluation-'" one board
member asked of O.A. Garza,
the school's tax-assessor
collector. He responded by
saying it was usually by
estimation with no legal
