Would you believe it? Friday is the first day of summer. It seems
impossible to us Starr County-ites who have been melting in the
shade since mid-May, that Summer will only officially begin this
week. Summer is a very special season, with its own special joys. It
is a time for relaxing, a time for swimming, a time for vacations
and being with your family, a time for recreation. But most of all it
is time. The days are longer, the weather is almost always
pleasant, and this affords us time for hobbies and projects which
we could not have even begun during the busy school and club
meeting months. What did you plan for your summer? Have you
accomplished it? Have you started it? If not, Summer is really only
beginning this week, so go ahead and meet that goal or accomplish
that task that you set for yourself but needed time to complete.
About fifty people from Lexington and Caldwell, Texas have lent
a week of their time to helping people in Rio Grande City and
Camargo. They are working with the members of the First Baptist
Church and Templo Bautista. Bible Schools have been conducted
this week at three different locations in evenings. Much needed
work has been done on the church buildings themselves. They feel
that their time and effort has been well spent. Few people these
days spend their vacations doing what most people consider work.
Some left their families to come; others brought their children with
them, but they are working, they are sharing something wonderful,
and they are giving of that important element, time. The Bible
Schools will be completed on Friday, and the parents of the
children attending the Bible Schools are invited to visit the schools
to see what their children have been doing and learning.
Vacation Bible School will be held at the First United Methodist
Church of Rio Grande City next week, June 24-28. Classes will in-
clude children from four and a half years of age through high
school age students. The sessions are scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. in
the evenings, Monday through Friday, and will include stories,
refreshments, and games. All children of the community are in-
vited to attend.
The staff of the County Extension Office and their families
honored Sister Elaine Marie Newman with a Farewell Party on
Tuesday, June 11. Sister Elaine, who has served as secretary of the
Extension Office during the past year, is reporting back to the
Order in San Antonio. The barbecue supper held in her honor was at
the home of Mrs. Fela Ireland. The staff presented her with a gift
during the evening.
The Mr. and Mrs. Club held their monthly social during May at
the ranch of Mr. and Mrs. Fernando Salinas. Host couples for the
event were Mr. and Mrs. Salinas, Mr. and Mrs. Arturo Trevino Jr.,
Mr and Mrs. Noe Sanchez, and Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Margo. A
barbecue steak dinner was served. The club members made plans
for an upcoming Summer Social.

Newton, Johni.y Carson, Buddy Hackett, Frank Sinatra, Ella
Fitzgerald, and Count Basie.
A field trip to Falcon Lake Park was taken on Tuesday, June 11
by the patients of La Retama Manor Nursing Center in Rio Grande
City. They travelled to the park by private bus and enjoyed a picnic
there. A pinata was broken in celebration of the birthday of Mrs.
Rivera, a cook for the center. The trip was coordinated by James
Rodriguez, administrator; Mrs. Lydia Piper, activity director; and
Mrs. Beatriz Garza, Director of Nurses; in cooperation with Noe
Rodriguez.
