The week of November 4-10 was observed as Texas Nurse Week
honoring the over 50,000 registered nurses licensed to practice in
Texas. The special observance was proclaimed by Governor Dolph
Briscoe. Sixty-four out of every lOOworking RNs work in hospitals.
The remaining usually work in nursing homes, schools of nursing,
private homes, public clinics, educational institutions, industries,
and physicians' offices. Also instrumental in assuring the public
of quality health care are LVNs.

The time is past when a patient's assumption that their nurse
will be a female, was a correct one. Actually, men were the first
nurses, during times of war and plague, until the time of Florence
Nightingale. For years, nursing has been considered by most as a
woman's profession, but that trend is changing, and Texas is lead-
ing the trend in changing the image of the nurse as always being
a female. The University of Texas System School of Nursing grad-
uated a baccalaureate degree class of 316 nurses which included
2G men, probably the greatest number of men in any graduating
class in the U.S.

Refugio Carreon of Los Garcias reports that he was very pleased
to read the recent article in the Herald about the High School Li-
brary. Carreon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Miguel Carreon and is
in the Air Force, stationed in Taiwan as a Communication Analyst.
He receives the Rio Grande Herald there and enjoys the article,
which brought back many memories to him of when he was in Rio
Grande City High School. Miss Celia Guerrero of the High School
Library recalls that he worked as a library aide for four years
and enjoyed books and especially liistory. He majored in history
and government at Pan American University, wher? he graduated
in 1972, and he is present';-taking correspondence courses towards
a Masters degree.
