Got a beef? call
the U.S. Attorney
The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Tex-
as Anthony J.P. Harris of Houston was in the Valley
Tuesday morning warning against violations of the
election code and election laws.
"We are going to keep personnel on duty in our
Houston, Laredo, Corpus Christi and Brownsville
offices in case anyone wants to file a complaint in
connection with the elections this coming Tuesday,"
Farris said.
Karris said that Bill Bowers, Corpus Christi U.S.
Attorney, Raul Gonzalez, Brownsville U.S. Attorney
Jack Sheppard and himself in the Houston office anil
Dan Alfaro in Laredo will be on duty during the hours
between 7 a.m. and 12 midnight to receive any and all
complaints.
The callers may call collect to Houston to area
code 713-22G-4741, Corpus Christi- AC312-884-3454,
Brownsville AC 512-542-7132 and AC 713-723-G523
in Laredo.
School probe
continues...
In an exclusive interview with the Herald U.S. Attor-
ney for the Southern District of Texas Anthony J.P.
Farris said that the investigation into the local school
district was continuing and had not been dropped as
has been mis-stated by some local politicans.
"We have gone into the books from the school dis-
trict and have obtained all the information we needed
and will be returning the books to the district within
a few days", Farris said.
He said that the investigation has been a little slow
due to the fact that other federal agencies have be-
come involved in the investigation and because the
U.S. Justice Department has been getting assistance
froir* other federal agencies to compile all the infor-
mation that has been gathered.
In conversation with U.S. Attorney Jack Sheppard
he said that he has received many calls willing to help
him in their investigation of the district and appre-
ciated the offers.
"We appreciate all the people that have called and
offered to help both from outside and within the school
district and I want to extend my sincere appreciation
for it", Sheppard said. "I think tliat when people get
involved in their schools like this it shows that they
want to do something to correct anything that is
wrong," he concluded.
Notice
Texas state statutes
clealy define a newspaper
that is qualified to run
legal advertising and to
give a publishers' affidavit
which will stand up legal-
ly*
First, the newspaper must
be one of general circula-
tion in the area in which
the institution or govern-
mental agency runs the leg-
al notice.
Secondly, the newspaper
must have a second class
mailing permit issued by '
the United States Postal
Service.
Thirdly, the newspaper
must have been published
continiously for the past 12
months, with at least 50
issues.
Legal notices, such as
those published by banks
ou the statement of condi-
tion and by cities or school
boards, are therefore in-
valid unless published in
newspapers that meet these
requirements.
Similarly, newspapers
that have not been published
for at least 12 months are
prohibited under the Texas
election code from pub-
lishing political advertise-
ments.
In Starr County, only the
f Rio Grande Herald meets
> the requirements of a legal
I newspaper in the state of
, Texas.
