THANKS GOVERNOR FOR 1
PARDON; INTERCEDES FOR
TWO AGED CONVICTS
fiy.
hi;*
Austin. Aug. 7—Desiring to person-
ally thank Governor Hobby and the
Hoard of Pardons for granting. Ijini a
hill pardon, "Uncle" Millie Edwards,
who was recently, given bis freedom
after having served nearly ten years
of a thirty-five-year sentence, came to
Ai'iMtin. shook hands with the chief ex-
ecutive and each member of the
board.
It was nearly a month ago that
"Uncle" Klllle was Illieratcd. Since
then be lias been on his farm in Cal-
lahan County. By the discovery of
oil on ills 320,-acre tract he Is reputed
to be almost a millionaire.
ft was on his seventieth birthday
that "Uncle** Bllile was granted his
freedom.
The pardon granted by Governor
Hobby was not the first "Uncle" ltil-
lle Kdwards had received, the others
having come from Governors Colquitt
and Ferguson. They were refused, lie-
cause the man insisted lie had "not
yet atoned for the crime."
It was not until recently that "Un-
cle" Hlllie would consent to listen to
'he suhjtvf of a pardon. He finally
admitted ahat his conscience had de-
chhsl that he had paid the penalty
nnd he was ready to return home and
begin life anew. "Uncle" Hiillc, while
here, interceded with the hoard in
behalf of two aged convicts who have
serevil fourteen years.
in spite of their showing in this se-
ries
—WHh- the- tournament- half-—played,
there are only 205 points lietweeu the
leadera and the tall enders* This In-
dicates that the teams are well match-
ed, and the remaining gniue* should
firove doubly interesting. •
0 The next series will be played Mon-
day evening at the Y. M. C. A. The
impression has gotten out that Tues-
day would be the next playing date,
but this Is error. The games will be
played Monday evening at the "Y."
