St. Louis. Mo., July 12.—The
first news that young Brooks
received this morning was that
the governor had simply grant-
ed liiin a respite for tnenty one
days. This was construed to
mean that the governor intend-
ed to take time to fully exam-
ine the case. Later Brooks re-
ceived a telegram from his at-
torneys announcing a respite
for four weeks andatating that
the governor had refused to
commute the sentonoe or inter-
fere in the matter. This was a
sad blow to Broojps and he said
he did not understand it. He
had felt confident that the ^gov-
ernor would see hia way clear
to grunt commutatioa, but now
all hope was goue and he
would prepare for the end.
l'here was no excitment and
very little curiosity about the
jail or four courts when the
news came and there does not
seem to be much interest tak
en in the matter by the citizens
generally. As no action will be
taken in the case of Henry Lan-
graff, he will be hanged to-ntor-

Two Ways. Choose Which.
There are two usual ways of
doing what Nature sometimes
does incompletely, namely, to
relieve the bowels. One is tc
swallow a drastic purgative
which evacuates profusely, ab-
ruptly and with pain, the other
is to take Hostetter's Stomach
Bitters, the effect of which is
not violent, but sufficiently
thorough, and which does not
gripe the intestines. If the first
is selected, the person employ-
ing it need not expect perma-
nent benefit,and he cannot hope
to escape the debilitating reac-
tion which leaves the organs as
bad or worse off than before.
If. on the other hand, he resorts
to the Bitters , he can rely upon
the restoration of a regular hab-
it of the body, consequent upon
a renewal of healthful tone in
the intestinal canal. Besides
healthfully relaxing the bowels
the Bitters arouse a dormant
liver, Imparts a beneficial irn
petus to the action of the kid-
neys, and counteracts the early
twiugles of rheumatism, a ten-
dency to gont, and malaria in
all Its forme.

St. Louis, No. .j uly 11—The
usual death >v tcli, <V08 sot ut
6 o'clock this! mornitij, over
Hugh M. Brooks, alias Maxucu
and Henry Landgral, who are
under sentence to hang Fri-
day. Three guard* have the
prisoners in special charge and
will not lose sight of them for
a moment until the execution
lakes place or the governor in-
terferes with clemency. Brooks
spent most of the afternoon
playing dominoes with his
watchers, and was in a pretty
good spirits. To night word
came from Jellersou Oilv that
his attorneys finished their argu
ments for commutation of sen-
tence before the governor this
afternoon and that ofHciul will
announce his decision at 0
o'clock to morrow morning.
The prevailing notion is Brooks
will be respited for a brief
time.
